Five Cool Things to Check Out …

September 19, 2019 By admin

NYC’s new American Girl Place, one of our favorite New York City hotspots has a glitzy new home in Rockefeller Center. The 40,000-square-foot flagship store is stunning and the location is perfectly central for locals and tourists. If you’ve got an American Girl doll fan at home, read on to learn about Five Cool Things to Check Out at NYC’s new American Girl Place.

Five Cool Things to Check Out at NYC’s New American Girl Place

Five Cool Things to Check Out at NYC's New American Girl Place

Five Cool Things to Check Out at NYC’s New American Girl Place

1) The American Girl Salon, Only At American Girl New York

One of the major enhancements at the new American Girl Place is the gorgeous American Girl Salon. Dolls have always been able to enjoy salon pampering but now girls can get in on the spa and salon action too. Girls can choose hairstyles to match their dolls (or not) and they can now enjoy mini mani’s and ear piercing alongside their dolls. And yes, the ear piercing is major news! Girl hairstyles start at $25 while doll styles begin at $10. It was so fun to watch my daughter and her doll Lea have their hair done in matching styles with coordinating ribbons. If you’re looking for a special girl’s day out treat, a stop here will definitely impress everyone. You’ll want to review the salon options and make reservations in advance, especially over holidays and weekends.

2) The New American Girl Cafe

Always a classic choice for a special dining treat, the new American Girl Cafe features modern decor, an updated a-la-carte menu and they have done away with the set seating times so you won’t find yourself waiting in a long line. You and your dolls can enjoy brunch, afternoon tea, lunch or dinner with old menu favorites (pink lemonade, pigs-in-blankets, cinnamon buns, chocolate mousse flowerpots) as well as new offerings. Dolls can enjoy meals (in their own seats – so bring them along or borrow one at check-in) and girls are given souvenir dining accessories to use and take home. We enjoyed our lunch and my daughter loved getting to share the experience all glammed up along with her doll. Yes, they have private rooms for birthday parties so keep that in mind when birthday season arrives.

3) Explore American Girl Books and Movies

The new American Girl store features a comfortable section where kids can watch the company’s award-winning movies and videos. There is also a cozy nook where kids can browse the brand’s hundreds of best-selling fiction and advice books. I love that these areas are for kids (and parents) to relax as shopping in NYC can be very hectic. My daughter is in third grade and the American Girl books have really been essential in teaching her how to navigate friendships and her growing body.

4) Create Your Own Design Studio

My favorite new addition is the Create Your Own Design Studio where girls can custom design their own doll via an online experience that takes personalization and customization to a whole new level. There are more than one million possible design combinations from hairstyles, eye colors, skin shades and accessories galore so girls can truly create the doll of their dreams. Girls can also design one-of-a-kind doll and girl-sized clothing at the design studio, which can be printed in-store. If your daughter likes to add her personal touches to everything, she will love these new options.

5) Check out the American Girl Doll of the Year!

We’re huge fans of these annual additions (like Gabriela, Grace and Lea) and I love that the 2018 American Girl Doll, Luciana Vega encourages girls to explore science as she aspires to explore Mars someday. The New York City store features a special section dedicated to the annual doll as well as specialty items (like cafe drinks and salon services) toys and clothes. Best of all, the BeForever characters and newer dolls are featured in special showcases where girls can get a glimpse into their worlds and play in interactive areas. Younger girls will especially love exploring the WellieWishers and Bitty Baby areas.

It’s always a fun time when my daughter and I can join our friends for a joint Mommy and Me date at one of our favorite city hotspots like American Girl Place. If you’ve got an American Girl doll fan at home, you’ll need these tips for visiting American Girl Place in New York City.

1) Maintain your sanity by visiting off-peak. Weekends and holidays are busiest so if you can’t visit on a weekday, try to go early in the day to avoid the crowds.

2) Bring a doll! Dolls can enjoy meals (in their own seats) and pampering spa and salon services and hospital visits so bring them along.

3) Decide on spending beforehand. Is this a special birthday splurge trip or a regular visit? Agree in advance on what you’re planning to buy or how much money kids are allowed to spend to avoid meltdowns.

8) Have a meal at the American Girl Cafe. Make reservations in advance for the cafe’s popular offerings (brunch, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner) and enjoy a fun-filled meal in a fancy but not formal setting.  We went for an early dinner and the girls loved having their dolls sit alongside them in special chairs with their own mini plates and cups. The menu featured a variety of fun (and relatively healthy) options for adults and kids and the girls loved the adorable cinnamon rolls, fruit kebobs and flower pot dessert. There were birthday cakes and singing all around making it even more festive and definitely a great spot for a celebration.

Globetrotting Mommy’s …

December 21, 2015 By admin

Family friendly activities, vacations and books are great holiday gifts but there is nothing like watching a kid open up the most wanted toy on their wish list. Today I’m sharing my Best Toys for Kids Holiday Gift Guide.

Globetrotting Mommy's Holiday Gift Guide - Best Toys for Kids, toys, Shopkins, Barbie, Zoob, Monopoly, Sleepover Sara, Dolls

Globetrotting Mommy’s Holiday Gift Guide – Best Toys for Kids

Best Toys for Kids – Holiday Gift Guide

1 – Shopkins anything! – I can’t write a 2015 holiday gift guide without including Shopkins since my daughter and all her friends are soooo obsessed with these little guys and their many cute playsets. If you can get your hands on Target’s Exclusive Shopkins Mystery Edition this holiday season, you’re golden.

2 – My First Weaving Loom – The crafty kids on your list will love this kid-friendly loom. My perfectionist daughter needed a bit of assistance to keep the rows even but the results were impresive. I love that it includes instructions and measured out chenille yarn to complete three projects (headband, scarf and purse). Once you master those, you can create your own projects with the sturdy wood loom and crafting tools.

3 – Monopoly Junior – This mini-me version of the classic board game is a great gift for boys and girls.  In addition to the traditional version, there are also themed games including the ever-popular Frozen.

4 – Barbie Pop-Up Camper – My daughter got this as a birthday present and it was an immediate hit.  Barbie is really traveling in style these days with roof-top dining, chandelier lighting, pull-out swimming pool with slide, fire pit, bathroom and more. Girls will love taking their Barbies “glamping” as they play for hours. Make sure to leave yourselves some time to put together the pieces and attach the zillions of stickers.

5 – Sara Sleepover Doll – Every little girl I know can’t wait to host or attend her first sleepover. Let your little one take this adorable plush Sara Sleepover Doll for a test-drive and you won’t have to worry about anyone going home in the middle of the night.  Sara comes with comfy detachable bunny slippers and a cute teddy bear that can be stored in a velcro pocket which makes her a perfect pal to bring along on real sleepovers, vacations and summer camp.

6 – ZOOB Z-Strutz Scorpion Driller – If you’ve got a little builder, this ZOOB kit will be a hit. Kids can build a Scorpion Driller, Tunnel Driller, Vertical Driller or a Mine Cart with the enclosed pieces or make their own creations. I love how the pieces move after you put them together so kids can let their imaginations run wild.

7 – Beanie Boos – These ever popular collectibles come in a wide array of characters and sizes.  I love that they are small enough to not over clutter a bedroom and they are also great for bringing on vacations.  The tiny versions clip onto backpacks so your kids won’t lose them.

8 – Vicks Sweetdreams Cool Mist Humidifier (in pink or blue) – A humidifier isn’t exactly a toy but when it can project fun images onto ceilings, I think that changes everything. You can choose from starry night, sea and safari themes (each theme features three images) which can be projected with or without the humidifier running. If you’re looking for a way to combat winter dryness and keep your babes soothed as they fall asleep, this is sure to please.

9 – Scientific Explorer Tasty Science Kit – Young experimenters will love this STEM culinary science kit. The kid includes materials to make ten tasty projects including fizzy drinks, rock candy, and other sweet treats. I love that it teaches kids about flavors, taste buds and sensory cues with a little chemistry thrown in for good measure.

10 – Project Mc² Dolls – This new doll line from MGA Entertainment is all about teaching girls that Smart Is The New Cool. Each of the four adorable doll sets include a real science experiment, fun accessories and stand. We tried the volcano experiment with the Adrienne Attoms doll and it was a big hit. Bratz Dolls Encourage Girls to …

September 1, 2015 By admin

One of the best times of my life was spent studying abroad in Rome during my junior year of college. I have such great memories of visiting the famed sights, eating tons of gelato (pizza too!) and living among the locals.  When I heard that Bratz was reintroducing a new doll collection featuring a group of five study abroad characters, I couldn’t wait to check them out with my daughter.

Bratz Dolls Encourage Girls to Travel the Globe with New Study Abroad Collection

Bratz Dolls Encourage Girls to Travel the Globe with New Study Abroad Collection

When I took Raya, the study abroad Mexico doll, out of her box, my five-year old daughter was immediately drawn to all her fun accessories. Raya comes with two trendy outfits that can be mixed and matched, jewelry, hair accessories, a tote bag, cactus and piñata key ring along with a roller board suitcase with stickers for kids to decorate.

Dolls have come a long way since I was a kid and I loved all the attention to details on the outfits as well as the great hair that doesn’t immediately get knotty. I also loved that these dolls will expose young girls to different cultures through play. I also hope these dolls will encourage young women to study overseas as study abroad is on the decline.

The Bratz Study Abroad collection features Raya and the following dolls (pictured above) who all come with two outfits, jewelry and suitcases:

Cloe is just back from China with a teapot and teacup, a ying yang purse, a fortune cookie key ring.

Jade came back from studying in Russia with nesting dolls and a fabergé egg key ring.

Sasha returned from Britain with Union Jack purse, teacup and scones and a bunny bodyguard key ring.

Yasmin is back from Brazil with colorful sunglasses and a pineapple key ring.

In addition to the new Study Abroad dolls, Bratz revamped their entire line with a new look and feel that embodies the interests, passions and personalities of the modern day girl. The core collections are available now at Target, Toys”R”Us and Walmart stores nationwide.

I think these would make a great back-to-school gift for any globetrotting girl.

Globetrotting Girls: Meet …

April 2, 2015 By admin

If you’ve got a daughter who loves to travel, cook and play with dolls, today is your lucky day!  If you don’t already know, each year American Girl introduces a Girl of the Year and the 2015 American Girl doll, Grace Thomas, is my favorite one yet.

American Girl, Doll, Grace, 2015 Girl of the Year, France, Toys, Kids, Girls, Baking

Globetrotting Girls: Meet Grace, the 2015 American Girl Doll

Grace is an enthusiastic girl who loves to bake with friends and invent new recipes.  A trip to Paris inspires her to try new things – including turning her passion for baking into a business. Oh la la!  I love that she encourages young girls to see the world but I also love that she encourages girls to help hungry kids by hosting bake sales with the For Goodness Bake program.

As always, a whole array of clothing, accessories and books have been introduced for Grace (and girls) including Parisian inspired accessories, chic outfits, a cute travel set and a tres magnifique (and tres expensive) French Bakery. My five-year old daughter and Grace have become fast friends. They practice counting in French, compare charm bracelets, read and bake together. Grace enjoys exploring NYC with us and my daughter enjoys styling Grace’s hair and outfits.

To encourage girls to get baking, American Girl is teaming up with Sur La Table stores nationwide to offer American Girl at Sur La Table: Make & Bake French Treats classes this April and May.  In these special two-hour cooking classes, young bakers learn the fundamentals: following recipes, measuring, mixing and working safely in the kitchen. Girls get hands-on in the kitchen, learning the chefs’ secrets for making French pastry favorites including apple tarts, chocolate éclairs and Eiffel Tower cookies. Every girl gets to take home a goodie bag, including an American Girl apron and a cookie cutter from Sur La Table so they can continue their baking adventures at home.

Photography tips: Dress the …

March 10, 2014 By admin

Did you ever try to take a photo of your kid and have them not want to look at the camera? Me too. Imagine if you could find a way to combat that especially on vacation when you’re trying to capture your kid and the scenery for a once in a lifetime shot. If you’ve got a daughter, I’ve got an idea for you — matching Doll & Me Fashion Sets from Our Generation doll.

Photography tips, Our Generation Doll, NYC, Travel, Doll & Me Matching Outfits

Photography tips: Dress the part with Our Generation Doll & Me Fashion Set

My daughter loves her dolls, stuffed animals and beloved Pinky, a raggedy pink lovey and often brings them with her when we’re traveling. One day, I surprised her with Our Generation’s Hally and the “One Smart Cookie” set. She loved the doll naturally, but when I showed her the next surprise – a matching Our Generation Doll & Me Fashion Set – her face lit up.  The pink tutu skirt is just my girly girl’s style and the gray tank top and shrug sweater add just the right amount of big girl sophistication. She couldn’t wait to dress up in matching outfits with her doll and show off their cuteness.  We ran across the street to the park and I said smile for the camera and she did just that.  She wanted to make sure I got photos of just Hally too because she looked so pretty.

Globetrotting Mommy Photography tips: Dress the part with Our Generation Doll & Me Fashion Set

I think this is a great way to get kids excited about an upcoming family photo shoot and holiday pictures as well as vacation shots.

The dolls are sold at Target individually ($23) or in deluxe sets ($32) with accessories and a book.  Our Hally deluxe set came with a selection of clothes including a dressy school girl outfit and a casual gym set with sneakers as well as fun accessories like a backpack, notebook, report card, fortune cookie and a “One Smart Cookie” chapter book and bookmark. There are so many different styles and accessories available and they are all so affordable compared to so many other brands.

There are several Doll & Me Fashion sets for the 4-6 set and they’re just $30 which is a great price.  From dressy party dresses to sundresses there are some great options for the upcoming spring and summer holidays. I think they’d also be cute for sisters and cousins who want to coordinate their outfits and a fun gift idea for any little girly girl you know.

And if you want to take your doll on a trip with you, check out the fun selection of Our Generation doll carriers.
