I’ve visited Castaway Cay on three separate trips and it never disappoints. There is so much to see and do on this island so be sure to save some time for exploring and don’t miss these awesome Castaway Cay photo-ops.

Top 5 Tips for Seeing Frozen …

October 24, 2018 By admin

Since my Tips for Seeing Frozen on Ice were such a hit, I’m back to share some tips for seeing Frozen on Broadway, one of the most popular shows in town. Read on for your chance to win two tickets!

Top 5 Tips for Seeing Frozen on Broadway and Ticket Giveaway

Top 5 Tips for Seeing Frozen on Broadway and Ticket Giveaway

For the first time in forever, Anna and Elsa are starring in a full-length theatrical Broadway production. This version of the popular movie about sisterly love wows crowds with a few new songs, awesome special effects, loveable characters and phenomenal singing. The St. James Theater has truly been transformed into a winter wonderland with falling snow, stunning sets and everyone from Arendelle including the adorable Olaf.

Although little princesses will want to see this one, I think it is best for kids 6 and up. For younger kids, I recommend sticking with Disney on Ice productions, Walt Disney World and Disney Land Shows and the awesome productions aboard Disney Cruises.

Top 5 Tips for Seeing Frozen on Broadway

1) Take kids to a few live shows (think Pinkalicous, Annie Jr. Gazillion Bubbles) before seeing a Broadway production. Once you’re convinced they can sit and focus for extended periods of time while staying quiet you’ll all be ready for Broadway. Here are some of my favorite theatrical productions for kids.

2) Arrive early. New York traffic and Times Square streets can get very hectic so be sure to arrive extra early. You’ll want some extra time to grab booster seats and check out the souvenirs.

3) Make a pit stop before the show starts no matter what! The show is 2.5 hours which is a long time for little bladders. There is one intermission but bathroom lines are crazy long and you will be stressed about getting back to your seats in time.

4) Discuss Broadway etiquette in advance. Be sure to reinforce the rules about staying quiet and not singing during the show. Show your kids some YouTube videos from the show so they will know what to expect the characters to look like on stage. Not all characters look like their movie counterparts which may raise some questions.

5) Prepare for everything. Bring non-messy snacks and beverages as well as wipes, ziplocs and a few small non-electronic toys. If kids need to take a break from the performance, there are live feed monitors located in each level’s lobby so you won’t miss any of the show.

Awesome Broadway Shows for …

July 26, 2018 By admin

Taking kids to New York City means checking out the latest Broadway shows for kids. The Big Apple has a wide variety of theater performances to fit every age and price range so you can bring along the whole family. From toddlers to teens, kids will enjoy these on and off-Broadway favorites.

Best New York City Shows For Little Kids (Preschool to early elementary)

Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater in Central Park

Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater in Central Park

Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater – Nestled away in Central Park, this gem of a Marionette Theater is the perfect place for small kids to see a short performance usually based on a classic children’s tale. We’ve seen favorites such as Jack and The Beanstalk and holiday shows here and our latest trip was to see Neverland: Peter Pan Returns. Kids sit in the front rows with parents on the sides and back so everyone is guaranteed a good seat and after the show, performers demonstrate the Marionettes which is always a hit. Most performances are good for toddlers and up but for Neverland, I would say the sweet spot is four and older.

Gazillion Bubble Show – Little kids love bubbles so its no surprise that this one-hour bubble extravaganza is a family favorite. Kids will love the gigantic soap bubbles, walls of bubbles, helium bubbles and bubbles within bubbles. Add in some special effects (like lasers and strobe lights) and bubble magic and even the grown-ups will be mesmerized. Note: Your kids will beg to have their picture taken in a giant bubble so be prepared to buy the pricey photo. Great for toddlers and up.

Best Broadway Shows For Kids 5 and Up

Awesome Broadway Shows for Kids and Other Great Performances

Awesome Broadway Shows for Kids and Other Great Performances

Frozen: The Broadway Musical – For the first time in forever, Anna and Elsa have hit the Great White Way by storm. Disney’s Broadway version of the popular movie about sisterly love has been updated with a few new songs but the main premise remains the same. The St. James Theater turns into a winter wonderland with falling snow, stunning sets and the adorable Olaf but the phenomenal singing steals the show. Although little princesses will want to see this one, it is best for kids 6 and up.

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical – Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? SpongeBob SquarePants! This surprise runaway hit is popular with kids and adults for good reason…the set, acting, choreography and music are all phenomenal. Think Squidward tap dancing with undersea friends, a very believable sponge and a colorful cast of Bikini Bottom characters running around onstage and in the aisles. If your kids haven’t seen a Broadway show yet, this colorful, confetti-filled extravaganza is a perfect first show. Great for ages 4 and up.

The Lion King – When you mention Broadway shows for kids, this one tops every list. Imagine a bigger than life puppet extravaganza full of imaginative costumes (giant Giraffes, leaping gazelles and majestic lions), amazing music, and unbelievable sets. This award-winning story of Simba, a cub destined to be king of his pride, is sure wow parents and kids at the same time. A good option for a child’s first Broadway show assuming they are familiar with the story. There are a few somewhat scary scenes so I’m recommending for ages 6 and up but younger children are welcome.

Awesome Broadway Shows for Kids and Other Great Performances

Awesome Broadway Shows for Kids and Other Great Performances

Aladdin – A classic Broadway musical is always sure to please and one of my favorite kid-friendly picks is Disney’s Aladdin at the New Amsterdam Theatre. The show features a great mix of dancing, singing, colorful costumes, spectacular sets, funny characters (OMG the Genie!) and witty repartee for the grown-ups. I love that there are no scary parts and that the storyline is easy for little kids to understand. When Jasmine and Aladdin go flying across the stage on the magic carpet, kids of all ages will be wowed. This show is two-hours and 30 minutes with one intermission so plan bathroom breaks accordingly. Tickets are pricey but all seats are good (even in the balcony) just be sure to grab boosters for small kids. If you’re looking for a theater outing with your favorite mom friends (and their kids), this is a great option. Ideal for kids 4 and up.

Best Off-Broadway Shows For Kids 5 and Up

Blue Man Group – This long-running show is perfect for kids (tots to teens) and adults too. My daughter describes this one as “kind of a circus, kind of a magic show and kind of a music show” which pretty much sums up this creative performance. The Blue Man characters, who remain silent and in-character throughout the show, do an amazing job entertaining as they toss cereal into each other’s mouths, interact with the audience, play drums, paint and perform other funny acts. My daughter was giggling throughout the entire show along with the other kids in the audience. The 90-minute show (no intermission) ends with gigantic streams of toilet paper flooding the seats from above so you warn small kids. Some scenes are loud so bring along headsets for sensitive ears. Stay and take pictures with the performers after the show but don’t expect them to chat. You can also catch Blue Man shows in Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, and Orlando or on their World Tour. Great for kids 5 and up.

Stomp is a favorite off-Broadway show for kids of all ages.

Stomp is a favorite off-Broadway show for kids of all ages.

STOMP – I first saw this show years ago when the East Village was super grungy and I was swinging single. I saw it again with my husband and daughter and it has stood the test of time. Located in the Orpheum Theatre, the one-hour and 45-minute performance (no intermission) is a great option for musical kids. The six-person cast uses rhythm and movements as they turn objects and body parts into musical instruments. There is no complicated storyline to follow and there is plenty of humor so young kids will definitely enjoy. Some parts of the show are very loud so earphones are a good option. You can also see Stomp on tour. Best for ages 4 and up.

Best New York City Shows For Tweens and Teens

Hamilton is the most popular pick among tweens, teens and adults and you cannot go wrong with this show. Getting tickets is tough and pricey and the language is complex so kids need to pay attention. The talented crew wows with their dance moves, rapping, wit and songs. Younger kids will miss the subtle sexual references but older kids will notice. It will definitely help if kids have some background on Hamilton and the American Revolution in advance so consider reading a Hamilton book or two before you go. My daughter has seen it twice and it is still her favorite show. Try to win the digital Hamilton lottery where you can get two tickets for just $20. Best for ages 8 and up as there is some strong language.

Awesome Broadway Shows for Kids and Other Great Performances

Awesome Broadway Shows for Kids and Other Great Performances

School of Rock, The Musical features an incredibly talented cast including several spunky children who play their own instruments. Based on the movie, with music by Andrew Lloyd Weber, this Broadway hit is full of humor, positive messaging and rock and roll. Jokes are geared to adults and children with some funny moments keeping us on the edge of our seats. The positive messages for adults (listen to your children) and children (be true to yourselves) really hits home. This is a great show the whole family will enjoy. Best for ages 7 and up.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – The world of Harry Potter has finally arrived on Broadway with an epic two-part play. The shows are set two decades after the final chapters of J.K. Rowling’s famed novels and the two plays can be seen on the same day or in two separate showings. These shows are long (2+ hours with a 20-minute intermission) so decide if you will see them back-to-back or separately. This show is popular so book as far in advance as you can. Tip: Make a lunch reservation if you are seeing both shows in one day. Great for Harry Potter fans (who are familiar with the books and movies) ages 8 and up.

Extra Resources for New York City Theater Lovers

Another recommendation for family-friendly (and affordable) programming is the New Victory Theater in Times Square. The shows we’ve seen here have always been unique with some featuring talented performers from around the globe. From acrobats to dance and magic performances, performances never disappoint. In addition, the central venue is gorgeous with a slew of kid-friendly amenities and interactive kids activities. The 2018/19 schedule is here so search by suggested age-range and you’re bound to find something great.

Have questions about a show not listed above?  Check out Petite Seat to keep up on the newest New York City shows for kids of all ages.

Toy Story Land is Coming to …

March 26, 2018 By admin

Toy Story Land, a brand new 11-acre land based on the Pixar favorite, is coming to Disney World this June and this is huge news for kids and adults! I’ve been busy getting the scoop on this project and today I’m sharing everything you need to know about Disney’s latest Hollywood Studios addition.

Toy Story Land is coming to Disney World

Toy Story Land is coming to Disney World

I first heard about Toy Story Land at a New York City press event in February where I learned about the coming attractions (new rides, oversized colorful toys and innovative food, oh my!), met the Toy Story characters and took a virtual reality ride on the new Slinky Dog rollercoaster. So much fun!

Last month, I attended the Disney Social Media Moms Conference (#DisneySMMC*) in Orlando where I got a chance to meet Walt Disney Imagineering Art Director for Toy Story Land, Ryan Wineinger and learned all about the planning and details. According to Ryan, Toy Story Land will feature Andy’s toys spread throughout the park and visitors will be able to interact with the toys and yes, this means plenty of fun photo-ops! I also got a sneak peek of Mickey and Minnie’s new Toy Story Land outfits. Aren’t they cute?

Check out Mickey and Minnie in their new Toy Story Land outfits.

Toy Story Land Rides

Soon to be a family favorite, the Sinky Dog Rollercoaster is perfect for smaller kids (minimum height 38 inches) and adults alike. The colorful Slinky dog car zips around the track, offering great views of Toy Story Land.

Guests will whoosh along on a family-friendly roller coaster, Slinky Dog Dash (pictured under development), take a spin aboard Alien Swirling Saucers and score high on the midway at Toy Story Mania! (Matt Stroshane, photographer)

Alien Swirling Saucers

The Alien Swirling Saucers are modeled after the famed toy that Andy won at Pizza Planet. Guests ride rocket ships as fun alien toys ride space saucers while the claw looms above.

Updated Toy Story Midway Mania

Toy Story Midway Mania is one of my daughter’s favorite rides so she’s excited that it will be prominently featured in Toy Story Land. This is a very popular ride so I’m glad to report they are increasing capacity with a new third track. There is also going to be a new entrance, based on the Toy Story Mania game box.

Dining at Toy Story Land

Toy Story Land will feature Woody’s Lunch Box where guests can grab quick meals and snacks including Mini Babybel (the official snack cheese of Walt Disney World) and old-fashioned soda floats.

Woody’s Lunch Box will be a new quick-service window serving tasty meals and old-fashioned soda floats within Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios when it opens in summer 2018. (Disney) (PRNewsfoto/Walt Disney World)

The most wanted holiday gift for American Girl fans is the new Create Your Own doll. Girls can customize everything from skin color, eyes and hairstyles to outfits and accessories to create one very special doll. There are more than a million options so be sure to take your time during the selection process or better yet, give her a gift card to create her doll online or at the in-store kiosk.

For Super Busy Kids:

Kids have super chaotic schedules so calendars are a great way to teach the elementary school set how to keep track of their activities and gym day. My daughter loves tracking her sleepovers and acting classes on her Kid’s Awesome Activity Calendar which includes stickers. And this Strong is the new Pretty wall calendar is an awesome way to for girls to welcome in 2018.

For Slime Loving Kids:

I wasn’t expecting it to last so long but slime and Thinking Putty are still crazy popular. DIY slime and putty kits will definitely score big points with tweens and this glittery Elmer’s Frosty Slime Kit is perfect for the holidays. FYI, I got this kit at Staples which is a great spot for buying, wrapping (think holiday paper, gift bags, ribbons and bows) and shipping holiday gifts in just one trip, a nice bonus for busy moms.

For Bilingual Babies:

Spotlight on Disney Cruises: …

October 18, 2017 By admin

We’re big fans of cruises for multi-generational family trips. I mean, there is really nothing easier to plan or orchestrate where everyone (ages 7-70) can find something to enjoy day after day without complaining about tired feet or hungry tummies. Add in Disney’s famed entertainment and character experiences, pampering services, and family-friendly dining and you know you’ll have an awesome time.

Spotlight on Disney Cruises: Marvel Day at Sea

Spotlight on Disney Cruises: Marvel Day at Sea

I’m excited to share the scoop on Disney Cruise‘s latest offerings that leave from NYC (so easy for tri-state residents) and feature a new Marvel Day at Sea. Available on select October and November sailings, the seven- and eight-night Disney Magic Bahamian cruises all include a stop at Disney’s private Castaway Cay and Port Canaveral, Florida, and a one-day Park Hopper ticket to be used at Walt Disney World theme parks. There is also a seven-night Canadian Coast cruise option from New York this fall and five-night Western Caribbean cruises departing from Miami in early 2018.

I attended a special luncheon to learn about the specifics of Disney’s Marvel Day at Sea and there is definitely something exciting for everyone in your family. From Marvel comics, films and animated series, to exclusive character interactions (including the debut of Black Panther and Loki), new shows, a fun-filled costume deck party, family trivia challenges, stunt shows, animation lessons, special youth activities and the first official appearance of Iron Man on a Disney Cruise ship, Marvel fans of all ages will be entertained.

New on the Disney Dream, MARVEL’s Avengers Academy lets kids participate in themed arts and crafts projects, games and Super Hero training sessions. I’m pretty sure my daughter would be happy spending a good chunk of the day here.

Additionally, there will be many opportunities for meeting-and-greeting with some of the most powerful Marvel Super Heroes and Villains such as an interactive show that will take place inside the Walt Disney Theatre with Doctor Strange. Guests will also be able to learn how to draw Super Heroes like Spider-Man, Captain, Iron Man, and Groot and even take a quiz to see which Marvel comic is the perfect one for you. Don’t worry about missing your favorite classic Disney Characters because they’ll be on board too. If you’ve got a princess lover and a Thor fan at home, booking this cruise will definitely win you the mom-of-the-year award!

There will also be exclusive at-sea screenings of Marvel Cinematic Universe fan-favorites including new releases and old favorites, as well as viewings of the Disney XD shows: Marvel’s Avengers Assemble, Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

Check out this video featuring Marvel legend Stan Lee and get ready to pack your bags:

We’ve taken two Disney cruises that left from Florida’s Port Canaveral so leaving out of NYC would make things even more magical. Ready to go? Check out my 20 Things to Know Before Taking about Disney Cruise Line and visit http://www.disneycruise.com.

Cool for School – …

August 25, 2017 By admin

September is almost here and back-to-school mania is in full swing. If you’re shopping for the elementary school set, check out my Cool for Back-to-School must haves for September and beyond.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL MUST HAVES – STUDENT NECESSITIES:

Cool for School - Back-to-School Must Haves for September and beyond

Cool for School – Back-to-School Must Haves for September and beyond. A sturdy backpack is a must.

Backpacks:
One of the most essential back-to-school items is a backpack so be sure to help your kids choose one that will be a good fit. I specifically look for a roomy interior, adjustable shoulder straps (plus for chest-straps), dual zippers, exterior compartments and side pouches for water bottles. My daughter uses a backpack when we travel so styles that wear well are a plus.
For third grade, my daughter chose this fun World of Disney Emoji backpack because her favorite vacation destination is Disney World (surprise, surprise). Some other backpack picks I like this year include JanSport Superbreak Backpack in Prism Pink Sparkle, J. Crew’s Glow-in-The-Dark Snaggletooth Monster Backpack, and Pottery Barn’s Mackenzie Navy Solar System Backpack. Don’t forget to grab some fun backpack charms like Whiffer Sniffer’s awesome scented foodie clips.

Lunch boxes:
We’ve got a collection of lunch boxes and my favorites are the ones that don’t leak and clean up easily (think spilled yogurt). This year we’ll have these four on rotation. The coordinating World of Disney Emoji Lunch Tote, All Change London Tube Stations Bag we got in London, a rugged Bentology Kitty Lunch Tote which includes a bento box and a cute Bixbee Owl lunch box.

Cool for School - Back-to-School Must Haves: Cool School Supplies

Supplies:

Depending on the ages of your kids, you’ll need to stock up on pens, pencils, markers, desk supplies and other fun items. My daughter’s teacher sends a wish list for class items but I love to have some fun supplies at home. This year, I choose some fun pencils from FlyingTiger, Crayola Silly Scents washable markers, indestructible Mabel’s Labels Back to School Combos with emoji designs, and a Bright Pink Poppin Stapler.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL MUST HAVES – FASHION AND ACCESSORIES:

Shopping for Back-to-School fashions is either fun or torturous depending on your child’s preferences. I choose to do a lot of my daughter’s shopping online so I can easily return items she doesn’t like.
This year’s styles are full of bright colors, shiny sequins and lots of emojis sure to please every girl in class. For sneakers, my daughter chose these bright emoji Stride Rite Phibians which are light weight and double as a water shoe making them great for travel. Customized denim is all the rage and my daughter had a great time decorating a vest with colorful sequin patches. So cute, right? My daughter hates when other kids have the same things so one-of-a-kind upcycled dresses from Courtney Courtney and hand crafted tanks, t’s and hoodies from Playdate NYC are great options for kids like her. And, don’t forget to stock up on accessories like kitty-cat headbands and giant “Jo Jo” hair bows.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL MUST HAVES – FOR EXTRA CREDIT:

A good night’s sleep is a must for students (and parents) so snag new pillows like the Snuggle-Pedic Ultra-Luxury Kool-Flow® bamboo shredded memory foam pillow that can be customized for the perfect fit. I can’t talk about school without mentioning lice prevention so now is the time to stock up on these yummy scented Rosemary Repel products from Fairy Tales Hair Care. If you are having trouble getting young kids to listen (or do homework, or get to school on time, etc.) get rid of the sticker reward chart and try the new Kudo Banz which rewards kids with bracelet charms they can proudly wear. And last but not least, another awesome item to buy now is Hero Clean Odor Eliminator because even tiny shoes get stinky.

What’s your favorite back-to-school item? Tell me below in the comments.

New Disney Villains Forever …

July 14, 2017 By admin

The U.S. Postal Service must have been brainstorming with 2nd grade teachers because the latest Disney Villains Forever stamps will surely start a new generation of pen pals!

New Disney Villains Forever Stamps are Perfect for Globetrotting Kids

The new designs celebrate the rich legacy of the Walt Disney Studio’s Ink & Paint Department with a sheet of 20 Forever stamps featuring 10 classic Disney Villains including the Queen (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs), Honest John (Pinocchio), Lady Tremaine (Cinderella), the Queen of Hearts (Alice in Wonderland), Captain Hook (Peter Pan), Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty), Cruella De Vil (One Hundred and One Dalmatians), Ursula (The Little Mermaid), Gaston (Beauty and the Beast), and Scar (The Lion King).

Whether your kids want to write to new pals, friends who have moved away, or kids they met on their travels, these new stamps are sure to get kids excited about getting and sending letters. I’ve been looking for fun ways to get my daughter to work on her penmanship this summer so I’m super excited about these.

They’re available tomorrow so be sure to stock up if you’ve got Disney fans in your house. Planning a Disney trip? Check out The 11 Best Things to do at Disney World.
