Are we there yet? A new iPad …

November 27, 2013 By admin

If you’re heading out of town for Thanksgiving, you’ll want to download the Map the World iPad app before you go.  It’s free, its fun, its educational and it”s a great app for traveling since it will keep the whole family entertained.

Globetrotting Mommy - Travelzoo's Map the World iPad app review

Globetrotting Mommy – Travelzoo’s Map the World iPad app review

This new iPad app, launched as part of Travelzoo‘s 15th birthday celebration, offers up nine puzzles for kids and adults to hone their geography knowledge.  You simply drag the colorful puzzle pieces into the matching spot while recordings of the place’s names help you learn how to pronounce them.

Globetrotting Mommy - Map the World iPad App

Globetrotting Mommy – Map the World iPad App

I did a few puzzles and they were quite challenging (I’m talking to you Oceans and Seas).  I really thought it would be too hard for my 4-year old but when I set her up with the United States puzzle, I was pleasantly surprised to see her finish it (in 10 minutes but still…).  If you’re traveling with grandparents, I think this would be an easy app to get them working on their techie skills since its pretty self explanatory and they’ll enjoy the congratulatory prompts along the way.

The new iPad game also introduces players to one of the world’s poorest countries, Malawi.  Through a giving-back program, Travelzoo is encouraging parents to donate $1 or more to Open Arms Malawi, a charitable organization that provides medical attention, shelter, education, food and love to some of Malawi’s 1,000,000 orphaned and abandoned children.  A nice touch to go along with giving thanks this season.

What’s your favorite app for traveling?

Road trip: The Crayola …

November 13, 2013 By admin

My daughter is very artsy so when I heard that the Crayola Experience (formerly the Crayola Factory) had been expanded and renovated, I knew we had to check it out.  Located about 90 minutes from New York City, its a great spot for a day trip or a weekend getaway. We stopped by on the way to visit family in Northern PA so it was a nice way to break up our trip.

Globetrotting Mommy - Crayola Experience

Globetrotting Mommy – Crayola Experience

We arrived shortly after opening so the crowds weren’t too bad. I definitely recommend arriving early if possible.  The Crayola Experience features four floors of activities for kids of all ages (no lie, we’re talking toddlers to teens) making it a great family destination. Crayons steal the show (fresh crayon smells waft throughout the exhibits) but you will also find activities that involve markers, wax, modeling clay and other artistic mediums.

Admission includes three tokens which can be used at Wrap it Up (custom crayons anyone?), Marker Mania and Modeling Madness. Additional tokens are $.50 each and you will definitely need more if your kids are anything like my daughter.  Start at the theater which features a 20-minute interactive show (part human and part animation) detailing how crayons are made. As you exit, you receive a newly born crayon. Throw it in your welcome bag and start your adventure.  Our first stop after the show was Wrap it Up.  We had a lot of fun making custom crayons as souvenirs for our friends and family.

Globetrotting Mommy - Crayola Experience

Globetrotting Mommy – Crayola Experience

From there we wandered up each floor and explored the activities.  Basically, my daughter quickly ran from one activity to the next while we chased her around holding the map and snapping photos.  You know how that goes.  The favorites were Melt Down (painting with various colors of melted crayons), Art Alive (an animation area where your artwork appears on the wall), Be a Star exhibit (smile and your picture turns into a coloring page, T-shirt, puzzle, etc.), Doodle in the Dark (you move on the mat and the coordinating crayon dances on the screen), Puzzle It (turn your drawings into puzzles), Paint Palette (a crafting area) and Drip Art (a very cool crayon version of spin art).  There were a handful of activities that were available for an extra charge which I found a bit annoying but they were mostly on the outskirts so that was nice.  Be prepared to say yes or you might face a non-crayon type of melt down…

Globetrotting Mommy – Crayola Experience

While we didn’t explore every single area (way too crowded play area, water works area seemed out of place, etc.) we still managed to spend about four hours and had a great time.  Be sure not to miss the memorabilia throughout the museum like the old school photos of vintage crayon boxes and their featured colors. Exit through the gift shop (of course) but this one actually features a nice array of gifts and souvenirs (including design your own packs of crayons and markers).

Things to know:

Admission to the Crayola Experience is $16.99 per person when you buy tickets in advance online. Kids under two are free. Annual passes are just $34.99 and are worth the price if you plan to visit two or more times in a year.

There is a cafe on the first floor or if you’re feeling adventurous, visit one of the downtown Easton restaurants within walking distance.  Be sure to check out the directions and parking information before you go and let me know what you think.

Bon voyage.

Stella and Dot’s new …

November 12, 2013 By admin

Every little girl I know adores dress up.  The more ruffles, jewels and tiaras the better, according to my daughter who is four going on 14.  Since so much of the plastic princess jewelry breaks in about three minutes, we’ve gone through a lot of heartache over broken baubles. I was super excited when I attended the Fashion Forward Conference and learned that Stella and Dot, a real jewelry company known for their quality and fun styles, had introduced a girl’s collection.

Globetrotting Mommy - Stella & Dot

Globetrotting Mommy – Stella & Dot

The styles are perfect for little and big girls with an adorable and chic mix of butterflies, flowers, pearls, rhinestones, chunky beads and fun charms.  I love that they are casual enough for the playground and classroom yet dressy (or fancy as my kid says) at the same time.  Globetrotting girls will especially love the Paris with Love Necklace and matching Paris Trio Earrings.

Here are some of my Stella and Dot favorites for girls:

Globetrotting Toys: Global …

November 5, 2013 By admin

It’s amazing how much stuff one little person can own.  We’ve graduated from bouncy seats and rainforest jumpers to princesses, dress up, dolls, building creations, books, puzzles, games and arts and crafts galore. I try to be super careful selecting my daughter’s toys since I’m not so interested in sharing my limited NYC space with bright colored, plastic monstrosities with never ending lights and sounds.

During the last four years, we’ve amassed quite a collection of B. toys (Critter Clinic, Alphaberry, Spinaroos, Stackadoos, Meowsic, Parum Pum Pum, Pop-Arty!) so I was very excited when they asked me to take a peek at their 2013 Holiday Collection. Aside from being pretty indestructible and entertaining, I love that B. toys feature muted unisex colors and volume controls.  I also love that B. toys come in eco-friendly packaging and help support philanthropic causes like Free The Children.

Globetrotting Mommy - B. toys review

Globetrotting Mommy – B. toys review

Today I’m sharing my review of the Global Glowball which is a globe, nightlight, music player and ball all rolled up in one pretty package. In play mode, push the continents to hear 39 different cultural songs and authentic music (Jazz, Rock and Roll, Bluegrass, Blues, Polka, Samba, Tango, Salsa, Celtic, Flamenco and more).  In lights mode, the globe turns into an illuminating nightlight.  In lights and music mode, you’ll enjoy 20-minutes of tunes from around the world and a glowing nightlight and music mode is just that.  The tunes are short and catchy and my daughter was very intrigued by the many varied sounds and rhythms (like rainforest, nature and animal sounds and instrumentals).

Globetrotting Mommy - B. toys review

Globetrotting Mommy – B. toys review

It was fun to discuss the different types of music and talk about the countries in each continent.  She’s just starting to learn geography (Madeline lives in Paris and the Lion King lives in Africa) and different languages (the goodbye song in her school features a bunch) so the Global Glowball gave me a chance to show her the places she’s been learning about.  Since she can’t read yet, it really didn’t matter that the countries weren’t labeled but she now recognizes the continents by color and shape (Africa is the big orange one).

I think this is a great toy that will really grow with a child.  I love the idea of the music and nightlight for a baby (great baby shower gift and nursery decoration). Toddlers will enjoy rolling it around and dancing to the different tunes while preschool and elementary school kids will enjoy learning about geography and musical styles.

Best of all, it’s pretty, fairly compact, educational and features a volume control and easy to find off button. B. toys can be found at all Target stores, online and at specialty toy shops throughout the United States and Canada. To find a store near you visit the B. Toy store locator.

Flying with kids? Check out …

November 4, 2013 By admin

Once upon a time, when I was a little girl, in-flight entertainment meant a coloring book, stickers and a Rubik’s cube.  Flying with kids has changed a lot and parents (and kids) will be thrilled to know that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) now says portable electronic devices can be used during all phases of the flight!

Globetrotting Mommy - Flying with Kids?

Globetrotting Mommy – Flying with Kids?

No more announcements telling passengers to power down cell phones, no more waiting patiently to reach 10,000 feet before turning on that IPad or Kindle, and no more bored kids during take off and landing!  According the FAA, implementation will vary among airlines but most carries are expected to be onboard with the new rule by the end of year.  Flying with kids who can’t wait to read e-books, play games and watch videos all flight long?  Delta and Jet Blue have already gone through the approval process so start there first.

Electronic devices still need to be used in airplane mode or have cellular service disabled and phones cannot be used for talking or texting.  But if an airline offers WiFi or Bluetooth, that may be accessed.

Here is the FAA’s list of 10 things you should know about the expanded use of personal electronic devices (PED) on flights:

  1. Make safety your first priority.
  2. Changes to PED policies will not happen immediately and will vary by airline. Check with your airline to see if and when you can use your PED.
  3. Current PED policies remain in effect until an airline completes a safety assessment, gets FAA approval, and changes its PED policy.
  4. Cell phones may not be used for voice communications.
  5. Devices must be used in airplane mode or with the cellular connection disabled. You may use the WiFi connection on your device if the plane has an installed WiFi system and the airline allows its use. You can also continue to use short-range Bluetooth accessories, like wireless keyboards.
  6. Properly stow heavier devices under seats or in the overhead bins during takeoff and landing. These items could impede evacuation of an aircraft or may injure you or someone else in the event of turbulence or an accident.
  7. During the safety briefing, put down electronic devices, books and newspapers and listen to the crewmember’s instructions.
  8. It only takes a few minutes to secure items according to the crew’s instructions during takeoff and landing.
  9. In some instances of low visibility – about one percent of flights – some landing systems may not be proved PED tolerant, so you may be asked to turn off your device.
  10. Always follow crew instructions and immediately turn off your device if asked.

For more details, check out the FAA’s press release.

Bon voyage!
