The Rockettes New York …

July 5, 2016 By admin

Seeing the Rockettes perform at Radio City Music Hall is one of my favorite New York City winter activities. Watching their synchronized dancing, fighting the Rock Center crowds and seeing the iconic Christmas tree just never gets old.

The Rockettes New York Spectacular – Awesome Summer Fun for Families

When my daughter saw a poster for The New York Spectacular, the Rockettes’ summer show, she immediately begged to go and I secretly cringed inside. My expectations were low but I figured it would be a fun outing to celebrate the end of the school year. I invited my mom to join us and planned a big NYC girl’s day to kick off summer.

It turns out, the New York Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes was indeed spectacular!  In fact, all three of us thought it was better than the Christmas show. I was pleasantly surprised to see how family friendly the story line was but what was most impressive were the amazing sets, cool technology, fun music and the choreographed dance moves that really made New York City come alive on stage.

The show follows two kids who accidentally get lost from their parents. The kids make their way around the city’s popular sights and attractions until the family is finally reunited at the end. Its a great sightseeing tour of NYC, as they visit the Empire State Building, Wall Street, Central Park, Times Square, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Fashion Avenue and other popular sights.

Along the way, famous statues and artwork come alive as the kids search for clues to find their parents.

The Rockettes New York Spectacular – Alice in Wonderland statue from Central Park.

The show opens with Taylor Swifts’s “Welcome to New York” and closes with Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York.” In between, the acts feature a mix of classic show tunes and modern music as well as an interactive scene that gets everyone dancing in the aisles. Some of my favorite musical scenes were the Rockettes tap dancing to “Singing in the Rain, dancing to “Money, Money,” surrounded by giant dollar signs and projections of stock-market tickers” and prancing around in a stunning red, white and black fashion show set to Madonna’s “Vogue.”

The Rockettes New York Spectacular – The Vogue fashion show was amazing.

Kids will have no trouble following along with the story line and they will especially love seeing Central Park’s Alice in Wonderland statue come alive and watching the famed New York Public Library lions Patience and Fortitude perform a rap number.  Its a little hokey but it all works.

And of course the grand finale stole the show…

If you want to escape the heat and see NYC from the comfort of Radio City Music Hall, head over to the New York Spectacular before it ends on August, 7, 2016. There is no intermission during the 90 minute show so plan snacks and bathroom breaks accordingly.

Have you seen a Rockettes show?  Tell me below in the comments.

The Art and Whimsy of Mo …

May 17, 2016 By admin

Attention Mo Willems fanatics…one of the cutest art exhibits has arrived in New York City and fans of all ages will want to check it out – The Art and Whimsy of Mo Willems at the New-York Historical Society.

The Art and Whimsy of Mo Willems at the New-York Historical Society, NYC, Museum, Mo Williams, Kids Exhibit

The Art and Whimsy of Mo Willems at the New-York Historical Society

One of my daughter’s favorite books as a toddler was Don’t Let The Pigeons Drive The Bus! and in the past six years, we’ve collected at least a dozen other Willems’ titles.  I love how hysterical kids get when these books are read aloud and I also love how engaging these books are for new readers. Willems’ adorable characters, easy to read copy and funny storylines are a win-win for grown ups and kids alike and so is this exhibit.

The Art and Whimsy of Mo Willems at the New-York Historical Society

Running through September 25, the exhibit highlights nearly 100 sketches and final drawings of the famed author’s works (like Knuffle Bunny and Elephant and Piggie) along with background on his career (including his Sesame Street days!), videos and memorabilia ranging from the early days to his 25th and final Elephant and Piggie book, The Thank You Book.

The exhibit includes an audio tour so you can follow along or you can just peruse at your own pace. My daughter listened to a large portion of the audio tour which included jokes and detailed descriptions of the artwork.  In addition to visiting the art displays and gift shop, guests will also want to rest and read at exhibit’s bus display which is stocked with Mo Willems books.

One of the biggest takeaways from the exhibit was learning how Willems created his characters by using shapes and my daughter got to try out Willems’ techniques with a hands-on sketch class. It was so fun watching my daughter and the other students learning how to draw the beloved pigeon. If you’ve got a little artist, I highly recommend attending one of these complimentary sketch classes.

Before you visit, be sure to check out the exhibit’s schedule which includes story times, movies, sketching classes, character meet and greet opportunities and more.

If you haven’t visited the New-York Historical Society before, don’t miss the DiMenna Children’s History Museum on the lower level which features a wide range of interactive activities and a gorgeous reading room.

Are you looking forward to visiting this exhibit? What’s your favorite Mo Willems’ book? Tell me below in the comments.

Fun Food Friday: New …

March 25, 2016 By admin

If you’ve already waited in line for a Cronut, its time to taste test the latest New York Foodie Fad: The Rainbow Bagel at Brooklyn’s Bagel Store.

Fun Food Friday: New York’s Rainbow Bagel Craze

Popular with tourists and locals alike, these rainbow bagels have been all the rage on Instagram and today I’ve got the inside scoop. The two Brooklyn locations have seen major lines so you definitely want to try for an off-peak time like midweek or first-thing in the morning. I was surprised by the really long evening lines so don’t expect the crowds to thin as the day goes on.

Fun Food Friday: New York’s Rainbow Bagel Craze

On a recent weekend visit, they were handing out home-made rainbow playdoh to kids which definitely made the wait go by a little faster.  The colored bagel and cream cheese offerings change often but you can count on the famous rainbow bagels being on the menu, until they sell out for the day.

The rainbow bagels are slightly sweet so they are great paired with the funfetti sprinkle-loaded or canoli flavored cream cheese.  The day we visited, they were also selling Superbowl team colored bagels and red, pink and white red velvet bagels.  My daughter paired her red velvet bagel with red velvet cream cheese and it was like eating dessert for breakfast.

In addition to the colored varieties, there are traditional and non-traditional bagels (like Cragels) and flavors (savory and sweet) that shouldn’t be overlooked.

If you’re craving something savory, the bacon, egg and cheese bagel features all three ingredients baked right in/on the dough. It sounded a little weird but it was one of the tastiest bagels I’ve ever had.

If you’ve got friends visiting from out of town or if you’re heading to NYC, add a stop here to the agenda.

The bagels run about $4 bucks each (pre-cream cheese) so be prepared to spend some dough… Grab some coffee and take your bagels to the nearby park so the kids can run off their sugar high.  Win-win.

Have you ever had a rainbow bagel?  Tell me about your experience below in the comments.

Exploring Central Park With …

March 2, 2016 By admin

Spring has finally sprung here in NYC and that means its time to go play outside! One of my favorite spots for families with kids of all ages is Central Park and springtime is one of the best times to plan a visit.

Exploring Central Park With Kids, NYC, Family Travel, Globetrotting Mommy

Exploring Central Park With Kids

Exploring Central Park with kids is especially fun when the park is in full bloom. After our long dreary winters, it is a treat to see green grass and colorful flowers and kids will love running around taking in all the fresh air and expansive lawns.

Pack a picnic, grab a frisbee and plan to spend a few hours (or a whole day) exploring Central Park. Here are some of my favorite springtime activities for families:

  • Visit one of the many playgrounds
  • Climb a statue or two (Alice in Wonderland is my fave)
  • Stop at the Central Park Zoo (and Children’s Zoo)
  • Take a spin on the Central Park Carousel
  • Go fly a kite
  • Visit Victorian Gardens (opening Memorial Day weekend!)
  • Get your caricature done
  • Visit Bethesda Fountain
  • Rent a row boat
  • Race boats at Conservatory Water
  • Check out a story time
  • Stop for lunch at the Loeb Boathouse
  • See a free Shakespeare in the Park performance (starting in May)

Check out my Tips for Central Park with Kids in Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall story on TravelMamas.com for more details and be sure to visit the Central Park event calendar before you visit.

Fun Food Friday: The Cronut …

February 12, 2016 By admin

Cronuts may be yesterday’s news but the Cronut craze at Soho’s most famed pastry shop Dominique Ansel Bakery, is alive and well with tourists and locals alike.

Fun Food Friday: The Cronut Craze at NYC's Dominique Ansel Bakery

Fun Food Friday: The Cronut Craze at NYC’s Dominique Ansel Bakery

If you’re not familiar with the Cronut, here’s a quick lesson…its a flaky croissant-doughnut hybrid. The original can be found at NYC’s Dominique Ansel Bakery with flavor offerings that change each month.

Feast your eyes on the February 2016 Milk Chocolate Cassis Cronut! I can personally tell you that this Cronut was delicious. Think of a croissant built into a doughnut then rolled in sugar, filled with jam or cream and topped with glaze. What could be better?

And this my friends was the January 2016 Hazelnut with Blood Orange Jam Cronut. Yummmm.

Fun Food Friday: The Cronut Craze at NYC's Dominique Ansel Bakery

With just 350 Cronuts made each day, the demand is high and the lines form early.  When the doors open at 8am (9 am on Sunday), the line is usually stretched around the corner. If you’ve got to have one, come early and wait but if you’ll be in the neighborhood, try coming between 8-9 am and you might get lucky.  This happened to me in the aftermath of snowstorm Jonas and again last week so it could very well happen for you too.

If you’ve got friends visiting from out of town or if you’re heading to NYC, add a stop here to the agenda. And if the cronuts are sold out, you can always get your sugar fix with some of the other yummy pastries and coffee drinks.

Gorgeous, right? There is cafe seating in back so you can dig right in.

If you’re bringing kids, make sure to stop by the window where the Cronut bakers work their magic…

Don’t want to wait? Big news, you can now pre-order Cronuts online! The sales open every Monday and you must pick them up in person.

Each Cronut is priced at $5.50 plus tax so don’t forget your dough…

Have you ever had a cronut?  Tell me about your experience below in the comments.

Summer Family Fun: Top 5 Tips …

May 26, 2015 By admin

Its no secret that my daughter and I love a fun amusement park. With trips to Victorian Gardens, Adventureland, Hershey Park, and Sesame Place under her belt, I knew she would love a visit to nearby Coney Island. I had not been to the famed boardwalk town since pre-Hurricane Sandy so I was equally excited for our staycation day trip. Read on for my Top 5 Tips for Visiting Coney Island.

Summer Family Fun: Top 5 Tips for Visiting Coney Island

1 – Plan time for rides. I’m sure its no surprise that rides top my list of tips for visiting Coney Island. Kids of all ages will have hours of fun with a choice of several options including Luna Park, Deno’s WonderWheel Amusement Park, the B&B Carousell and the famed Cyclone. I found these smaller parks very managable, since the rides were very close together and it was pretty easy to navigate. If you want a ride that swings, speeds, bumps, spins upside down or just swivels, you’ll find it here. And, if you’re traveling with toddlers, there are quite a few slower kiddie rides. I love that you can purchase rides with several options ranging from a la carte to all-you-can-ride wristbands, and I also appreciate that non-riders can enter the amusement parks for free.

Summer Family Fun: Top 5 Tips for Visiting Coney Island

2 – Save room for food. Coney Island is home to famed Nathan’s Famous hot dogs and they never disappoint. If you’re looking for something indoors, try Applebee’s or the new Wahlburgers (yes, Mark, Donnie, and Paul Wahlberg own this burger hotspot). There are plenty of boardwalk restaurants, bars and snack shops (think funnel cakes, ice cream and everything fried, oh my…) and specialty stores like Piece of Velvet (cupcakes and cakes) and IT’SUGAR (a candy lovers delight). And, Coney Smorgasburg launched last weekend…so there is no shortage of good eats.

3 – Find the perfect activity for each kid. Coney Island really has something for everyone. If you’ve got baseball fans, check out a Brooklyn Cyclones game, some of which feature fireworks and character meetings. There are old school arcade games (yes, Zoltar!), amusement park games, circus shows and kids and adults will love a detour to the nearby New York Aquarium.

4 – Pack your beach gear. Coney Island boasts nearly three miles of family friendly beach. Bring a cooler and chairs and stay for the day or just take a quick dip and get back on the rides.  With courts for beach volleyball, handball, and basketball as well as playgrounds, the beach and boardwalk offer up hours of entertainment for families. Don’t forget the sunscreen and other family friendly beach essentials.

5 – Check out the special events schedule before you visit. From the famous Mermaid Parade and Luna Park’s SuperHero Day to circus performances, fireworks and karaoke, Coney Island’s summer schedule is packed with fun for the whole family.

Family Friendly Circus Fun: …

March 31, 2015 By admin

I love seeing shows that are fun for the whole family so when I heard that Flip FabriQue, a circus troupe from Quebec, was coming to NYC I knew we were in for a treat. We previewed their fun filled Catch Me! performance at the New Victory Theater this weekend and it was AMAZING!

Here are my top ten favorite things about seeing Catch Me! (Attrappe-moi) at the New Victory Theater…

1) Talented aerialists and acrobats. These six young performers do not rely on fancy costumes or technical wonders, the wow factors here are their amazingly strong bodies and choreographed moves. Trust me when I say you will be saying “Wow!” out loud.

2) Incredible juggling acts. I’ve never seen a kid who wasn’t amused by juggling and Catch Me!’s juggling acts had adults and kids giggling away.

3) Great music.  From ballads and guitar playing to Copacabana and I Like to Move It, the music is just as entertaining as the performers!

4) Awesome family friendly facilities. The New Victory Theater offers everything families need including stroller parking, free lockers, a gift shop and play area, concessions stand (with healthy snacks) and large padded booster seats that don’t slide off.

5) The tramp-o-wall act will blow you away.  The performers look like Spiderman as they fly through the air, jump into windows and bounce up from the trampoline along the set’s wall and rooftop. Its amazing.

6) Whether the performers are jumping into sleeping bags, bouncing on big yoga balls or racing to finish popsicles, humorous moments abound. The performers are friends in real life and you can feel their camaraderie on stage.

7) Full body hula hooping! The sole female performer stole the show with her amazing hula hoop act that used every limb of her body.

8) The theater is near Times Square but the 42nd street entrance means you can easily avoid the maddening crowds, naked and furry characters and touristy candy meccas if you want to.

9) Affordable family fun.  With tickets starting at $10 for members (and $15 for non-members), CATCH ME! is a very affordable option compared to traditional and adult-oriented circus shows.

10) Stay for the after party!  The cast members signed programs after our performance and there was a separate room outfitted with hula hoops, juggling games and a large chalk board for kids to play.

CATCH ME! (Attrape-moi) has a running time of 75 minutes with no intermission, and is recommended for everyone ages 5 and up. Catch them this spring (through April 19) before they head off to Europe and Australia. Visit the New Victory website for ticketing and other information.

Top Five Kid Friendly Activities to Celebrate Spring

1) Spring means colorful flowers and kids of all ages will be amazed by the creations at the 2015 Macy’s flower show Art in Bloom opening this weekend (through April 4). If you’re in New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago, Minneapolis, or San Francisco you’ll definitely want to check out this free show. Last year’s show was amazing so I can’t wait to see it this year.

2) Hersheypark is a great spot for family fun and their Springtime in The Park weekends are set for April 3-5 and 11-12. We took a road trip there last spring and its a great time to go without major crowds or heat waves. Check out my Hersheypark Review here.

3) For adventure seeking families in New York, Luna Park in Coney Island’s season opener is Sunday, March 29. Festivities begin at the famous 88-year-old coaster, the Cyclone with an egg-cream christening at 11:45 am.  The first 100 guests ride free so be sure to arrive early.

4) New York’s 2015 International Children’s Film Festival wraps up this weekend so come check out a kid friendly flick or attend the family friendly closing night celebration.

5) If you follow me on social media, you know my daughter and I attended a preview of Cinderella last week with The Moms and we LOVED it. If you’re looking for a must-see spring movie that will charm girls of all ages, this version of Disney’s Cinderella does not disappoint. The costumes are amazing, the actors and actresses are perfectly cast and even though you know the story, this live action film keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time. And, if you’ve got a Frozen fan, the Frozen Fever short beforehand is super cute.

What are your plans to celebrate the arrival of spring?
