Busy moms like me need to know what tricks and tools they can use to be their best selves at home and when they travel. Moms spend so much time to be sure kids have every article of clothing, snack, beverage and entertainment option at all times, we sometimes forget about our own needs.

So read on busy moms because today I’m sharing my favorite tips and tricks for feeling your best when traveling…

Tip 1 – Comfort is Key

Try on all your clothing before a trip to be sure everything fits comfortably, and try to choose outfits in the same color scheme so you can mix and match with ease. I always travel with a large pashmina scarf which I use as a blanket or pillow on the plane and for layering depending on the climate of my destination.

Tip 2 – Pack Shoes That Can Go the Extra Mile

A vacation is definitely not the time to break-in a new pair of shoes so don’t wait till the last minute to think about footwear. If you’re planning a trip with tons of walking (like Disney or NYC) pack a supportive sandal in a neutral shade or sneakers if that’s more your style. For winter trips, thick soled walking shoes and waterproof boots are a must.

Tip 3 – Keep Toiletries to a Minimum

This may not work for every mom but I love to use all those travel-sized make-up and toiletry samples when I travel. It’s a fun way to try new products and it leaves room in my suitcase for souvenirs. If you’re loyal to a certain brand, try to buy the smallest sized item or transfer it to a small travel-sized container.

Tip 4 – Keep Your Stomach in Sync

For most moms, travel means eating and drinking much differently than we do at home.  At home, I’m careful to eat a variety of fruits and veggies and drink plenty of water but when I’m traveling, this isn’t always the case. Whether you’re indulging in extra servings of pasta, oversized steaks or dessert with every meal (no judgement here!) your stomach is bound to react to the changes. It can be hard enough to find a clean bathroom when you need to go so the last thing I want worry about on a trip is problems pooping. Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater – Nestled away in Central Park, this gem of a Marionette Theater is the perfect place for small kids to see a short performance usually based on a classic children’s tale. We’ve seen favorites such as Jack and The Beanstalk and holiday shows here and our latest trip was to see Neverland: Peter Pan Returns. Kids sit in the front rows with parents on the sides and back so everyone is guaranteed a good seat and after the show, performers demonstrate the Marionettes which is always a hit. Most performances are good for toddlers and up but for Neverland, I would say the sweet spot is four and older.

Gazillion Bubble Show – Little kids love bubbles so its no surprise that this one-hour bubble extravaganza is a family favorite. Kids will love the gigantic soap bubbles, walls of bubbles, helium bubbles and bubbles within bubbles. Add in some special effects (like lasers and strobe lights) and bubble magic and even the grown-ups will be mesmerized. Note: Your kids will beg to have their picture taken in a giant bubble so be prepared to buy the pricey photo. Great for toddlers and up.

Frozen: The Broadway Musical – For the first time in forever, Anna and Elsa have hit the Great White Way by storm. Disney’s Broadway version of the popular movie about sisterly love has been updated with a few new songs but the main premise remains the same. The St. James Theater turns into a winter wonderland with falling snow, stunning sets and the adorable Olaf but the phenomenal singing steals the show. Although little princesses will want to see this one, it is best for kids 6 and up.

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical – Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? SpongeBob SquarePants! This surprise runaway hit is popular with kids and adults for good reason…the set, acting, choreography and music are all phenomenal. Think Squidward tap dancing with undersea friends, a very believable sponge and a colorful cast of Bikini Bottom characters running around onstage and in the aisles. If your kids haven’t seen a Broadway show yet, this colorful, confetti-filled extravaganza is a perfect first show. Great for ages 4 and up.

The Lion King – When you mention Broadway shows for kids, this one tops every list. Imagine a bigger than life puppet extravaganza full of imaginative costumes (giant Giraffes, leaping gazelles and majestic lions), amazing music, and unbelievable sets. This award-winning story of Simba, a cub destined to be king of his pride, is sure wow parents and kids at the same time. A good option for a child’s first Broadway show assuming they are familiar with the story. There are a few somewhat scary scenes so I’m recommending for ages 6 and up but younger children are welcome.

Aladdin – A classic Broadway musical is always sure to please and one of my favorite kid-friendly picks is Disney’s Aladdin at the New Amsterdam Theatre. The show features a great mix of dancing, singing, colorful costumes, spectacular sets, funny characters (OMG the Genie!) and witty repartee for the grown-ups. I love that there are no scary parts and that the storyline is easy for little kids to understand. When Jasmine and Aladdin go flying across the stage on the magic carpet, kids of all ages will be wowed. This show is two-hours and 30 minutes with one intermission so plan bathroom breaks accordingly. Tickets are pricey but all seats are good (even in the balcony) just be sure to grab boosters for small kids. If you’re looking for a theater outing with your favorite mom friends (and their kids), this is a great option. Ideal for kids 4 and up.

Best Off-Broadway Shows For Kids 5 and Up

Blue Man Group – This long-running show is perfect for kids (tots to teens) and adults too. My daughter describes this one as “kind of a circus, kind of a magic show and kind of a music show” which pretty much sums up this creative performance. The Blue Man characters, who remain silent and in-character throughout the show, do an amazing job entertaining as they toss cereal into each other’s mouths, interact with the audience, play drums, paint and perform other funny acts. My daughter was giggling throughout the entire show along with the other kids in the audience. The 90-minute show (no intermission) ends with gigantic streams of toilet paper flooding the seats from above so you warn small kids. Some scenes are loud so bring along headsets for sensitive ears. Stay and take pictures with the performers after the show but don’t expect them to chat. You can also catch Blue Man shows in Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, and Orlando or on their World Tour. Great for kids 5 and up.

STOMP – I first saw this show years ago when the East Village was super grungy and I was swinging single. I saw it again with my husband and daughter and it has stood the test of time. Located in the Orpheum Theatre, the one-hour and 45-minute performance (no intermission) is a great option for musical kids. The six-person cast uses rhythm and movements as they turn objects and body parts into musical instruments. There is no complicated storyline to follow and there is plenty of humor so young kids will definitely enjoy. Some parts of the show are very loud so earphones are a good option. You can also see Stomp on tour. Best for ages 4 and up.

Hamilton is the most popular pick among tweens, teens and adults and you cannot go wrong with this show. Getting tickets is tough and pricey and the language is complex so kids need to pay attention. The talented crew wows with their dance moves, rapping, wit and songs. Younger kids will miss the subtle sexual references but older kids will notice. It will definitely help if kids have some background on Hamilton and the American Revolution in advance so consider reading a Hamilton book or two before you go. My daughter has seen it twice and it is still her favorite show. Try to win the digital Hamilton lottery where you can get two tickets for just $20. Best for ages 8 and up as there is some strong language.

School of Rock, The Musical features an incredibly talented cast including several spunky children who play their own instruments. Based on the movie, with music by Andrew Lloyd Weber, this Broadway hit is full of humor, positive messaging and rock and roll. Jokes are geared to adults and children with some funny moments keeping us on the edge of our seats. The positive messages for adults (listen to your children) and children (be true to yourselves) really hits home. This is a great show the whole family will enjoy. Best for ages 7 and up.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – The world of Harry Potter has finally arrived on Broadway with an epic two-part play. The shows are set two decades after the final chapters of J.K. Rowling’s famed novels and the two plays can be seen on the same day or in two separate showings. These shows are long (2+ hours with a 20-minute intermission) so decide if you will see them back-to-back or separately. This show is popular so book as far in advance as you can. Tip: Make a lunch reservation if you are seeing both shows in one day. Great for Harry Potter fans (who are familiar with the books and movies) ages 8 and up.

Extra Resources for New York City Theater Lovers

Another recommendation for family-friendly (and affordable) programming is the New Victory Theater in Times Square. The shows we’ve seen here have always been unique with some featuring talented performers from around the globe. From acrobats to dance and magic performances, performances never disappoint. In addition, the central venue is gorgeous with a slew of kid-friendly amenities and interactive kids activities. The 2018/19 schedule is here so search by suggested age-range and you’re bound to find something great.

Remember all the family-friendly things to do in Williamsburg, VA – Part One?  Today, I’m continuing my trip review with the scoop on Jamestown Settlement, Historic Jamestowne, The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown and Busch Gardens which are all great options for a multi-generational getaway.  In addition to Colonial Williamsburg, you will likely want to spend full days in Jamestown/Yorktown and Busch Gardens.

Explore Jamestown Settlement

Jamestown Settlement takes visitors back in time to America’s first permanent English colony and I was really surprised how much we all enjoyed our time here. The indoor gallery is extensive and features a comprehensive introduction movie but the real fun is the outside living history areas that featured hands-on demonstrations and recreations of Native American villages.

My daughter loved seeing what life was like for the colonists and Native Americans in those days as she went in and out of tents, dressed up in costumes and helped make tools and weapons.

The fully costumed staff did a great job educating all of us about daily life and were happy to answer any and all questions.

Our favorite part was exploring the three replica ships that brought the English colonists to the area back in 1607.

Learning about the journey and seeing the various accommodations was so interesting to all of us.

Note: free motorized scooters are available if anyone in your party has mobility issues. Tip: Arrive early and plan to spend at least three hours here. Bring a picnic lunch or grab a quick meal in the cafeteria which offers a nice variety of healthy items, kiddie favorites and made-to-order sandwiches and a large seating area.

Visit Historic Jamestowne

We made a quick stop to Historic Jamestowne where Pocahontas and John Smith once lived in the first permanent English settlement in America.

We had a really interesting tour by a Jamestown Rediscovery archeologist who showed us around the James Fort excavation site.

It was especially cool to see the archaeologists excavating in the church and several volunteers were on hand to answer questions and share photos.

Tip: Historic Jamestowne is jointly administered by the National Park Service and Jamestown Rediscovery and kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge here after completing activities in the booklet (sold in the gift shop).

The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown

This indoor/outdoor museum does a great job explaining our nation’s founding starting from the colonial period. The living history museum features a wide range of uniforms, weapons and period artifacts.
There are a few movie options, the best of which is “The Siege of Yorktown.” My daughter enjoyed the interactive exhibits and movies but the outdoor attractions were her favorite.
There is an army encampment, working farm (seasonal) and period houses full of artifacts and games to explore.

We visited these three attractions all in one day and it was a lot. If we had a bit more time, we would have visited added in the Yorktown Battlefield, the site of the last battle of the American Revolutionary War.

Spend a Day at Busch Gardens

Voted the world’s most beautiful theme park, Busch Gardens is a great day trip for families. I really loved the design elements which showcased European icons like Parisian streets, Oktoberfest celebrations and London’s double-decker buses.

If you’ve got small children, the Sesame Street shows and play area are a great option while older kids will enjoy the many thrill rides and play areas. The park is a very manageable size and it is easy enough to navigate around in a circle but be sure to plan your route with meals in mind as some areas have very limited options and seating areas.

The service was particularly slow so definitely have a plan before your group gets hangry. Tip: The park opens in advance of the rides opening so arrive as early as possible to avoid crowds and long parking shuttle waits.

Road Tripping: Escape to Long …

As a born and bred Long Islander, Long Island’s East End holds many fond memories like ice cream eating, swimming, berry picking, pumpkin picking, animal-petting and soaking up the fresh air and sunshine. When I received an invitation to enjoy a girlfriend’s getaway including visits to the East End’s most popular attractions, I quickly secured my spot. Long Island’s East End is a great summer (or fall) escape for couples, families and girlfriend getaways and this trip did not disappoint.

Travel Tips

Driving to Long Island’s East End can be brutal so try not to go during peak times (especially Friday afternoon) if you can. Break up the drive with a stop at the Long Island Welcome Center (exit 51-52) where you’ll find super clean bathrooms, local snacks and beverages, plus outdoor space for kids (and dogs) to run around.

Where to Stay

Hotel Indigo is an ideal pick for a getaway to Long Island’s East End.

We stayed at Hotel Indigo Long Island – East End in Riverhead which is right off the Long Island Expressway and centrally located to all of Long Island’s East End attractions. I loved the modern decor and chic lobby vibe reminiscent of a boutique hotel, a rare find in Suffolk County.

My room was spacious and comfortable with earthy tones, plush bedding and contemporary furnishings. It had all the in-room conveniences I love (spacious bathroom with Aveda bath products and make-up wipes, Keurig coffee maker, free wifi) plus some other perks that are great for families like a dorm-sized fridge and microwaves (just ask at reception). The hotel is also pet-friendly so the whole family can enjoy an east end getaway.

Additional amenities include an outdoor saltwater swimming pool, furnished deck area, fitness center, and spa.

There is a complimentary shuttle to drive guests around and bikes can be borrowed from the lobby. The hotel is a hotspot with locals and visitors with special events throughout the summer and fall so check the schedule before you book your stay.

For dining, the Bistro 57 restaurant is one of the best in the area offering farm fresh dining and locally brewed beverages with innovative presentations (weekends book up, so make reservations in advance).

Shopping

The Riverhead Tanger Outlet Mall has something for everyone with shops ranging from Disney and Crocs to Kate Spade and Off-Saks Fifth Avenue, etc. If you’ve got a new home (or maybe a beach house) to decorate, you will definitely want to hit the Pottery Barn, William-Sonoma, Restoration Hardware and West Elm outlets. Stop by the information center to pick up a coupon book (free for AAA members).

Eating and Drinking

Long Island’s famed wineries are spread throughout the North Fork so plan to visit one or more depending on your crew. Most wineries offer large areas for picnics and kids are always welcome so pack some sandwiches and outdoor games if you’re taking the family.

Be sure to stop at a winery or two when you visit Long Island’s East End.

We stopped at Osprey Dominion Vineyards where we were treated to a delicious wine tasting and informative vineyard tour. We sampled Sauvignon Blanc, Dry Rose, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Verdot, as well as a warmed Spice Wine.

We really enjoyed hanging out on the scenic grounds, sipping wine and listening to live music. Such a perfect girlfriend getaway moment.

If you do bring kids here, a food truck serves kid-friendly fare like hot dogs and corn.

Another fun spot is The Riverhead Ciderhouse.  Check out the outdoor garden area or lounge on vintage sofas by the fire.

Come hungry to The Riverhead Ciderhouse on Long Island’s East End.

If you love cider, you’ll have a hard time deciding what to order but the $10 cider tasting is the perfect solution. I tried the Apple Annie, Cherry, Strawberry and Spring Fling and they were all deliciously smooth and refreshing.

This is a great place to drop by any time of day but I recommend coming hungry so you can sample their tasty culinary offerings like giant pretzels, table-made guacamole and innovative pizzas.

The large apple orchards can be seen from the parking lot so you know everything is super fresh.

If you love pies, make a quick visit Briermere Farms. They only sell whole pies to go (fresh or frozen) but if you’re looking for a small snack, I highly recommend the Raspberry Walnut Squares.

For the Kiddos

Garden of Eve Organic Farm & Market – Long Island’s East End was originally all farmland and there are plenty of farms and gardens left to explore. If you’re coming with kids, Garden of Eve is a nice option due to its manageable size, affordable attractions (just $5) and fun offerings like a bouncy castle, climbing tower, pedal cars, slides, hay rides and petting zoo.

Pick up some fresh produce at the Garden of Eve Organic Farm & Market on Long Island’s East End.

We enjoyed a hay ride around the farm where we learned about the organic produce grown each season and finished our visit feeding the cutest animals including baby lambs.

Long Island Aquarium – Located on Main Street in Riverhead, Long Island Aquarium is a full-scale aquarium with a theme around the “Lost City of Atlantis.”

Kids of all ages will enjoy visiting the Long Island Aquarium on Long Island’s East End.

One of Long Island’s best family attractions, the indoor and outdoor Aquarium features tropical fish, butterflies, bugs and birds as well as a gargantuan shark tank, interactive ray bay, penguins, a touch tank, an adorable sea lion show and so much more.

Have some ice cream and stroll the outdoor waterfront area if the weather is nice.

For a family-friendly day trip, stop by the East End’s famed water park. I’ve been here with my daughter several times it never grows old.

From wave pools and lazy rivers to log fumes and thrill rides, you will be laughing and splashing the entire day.  There are toddler and baby areas so even the youngest babes can enjoy a day here.

If you follow along on Instagram, you know we took a multi-generational spring break vacation in Williamsburg, Virginia. My daughter is a little history buff so I knew it would be fun for her but I was blown away by how many cool things to do in Williamsburg, Virginia appealed to our entire group. I usually choose cruises for multi-generational vacations because of their ease in getting around and activities for all but I’m happy to report that Greater Williamsburg is a great option for keeping parents, grandparents and kids of all ages engaged. It turns out history is a great common denominator and we all came away with more knowledge, memorable moments and awesome photos of our bonding getaway. We were there for an entire week and visited Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown and Busch Gardens but this post just focuses on our time in the Colonial Williamsburg area.

You probably already know but the main attraction for any Greater Williamsburg trip is Colonial Williamsburg. This carefully preserved area is a living history museum where visitors go back to revolutionary times as they mix and mingle with shopkeepers, tradesmiths, political figures and other costumed employees while strolling the area’s dirt roads and exploring the area’s museums.

They do a great job in creating a mix of special events, daily activities and free ticketed events for guests of all ages so check the online calendar before you go and get your event tickets when you first arrive as they tend to fill up. It is free to wander the grounds but you’ll need a ticket to enter most of the buildings and exhibits.

We especially enjoyed Resolved, An American Experiment at the Capital and Beyond the Bar in the courthouse. I heard the evening programs (Cry Witch and Ghost Walks) are great but we didn’t try them. The free ticketed events have something for everyone (we liked the Fife & Drum tour and Ben Franklin’s Glass Armonica demonstration) so be sure to check them out. You can plan a route or just wander around and visit the area’s workshops, famed houses and beautiful gardens. Kids will have all their questions carefully answered so be sure to prod them to ask away. Don’t miss the Wigmaker, The Famous Barber of York, Blacksmith, Bindery, Cabinetmaker, Foundry and Bakery (cookies go well with root beer).

Tour some of the houses like George Wythe House and Peyton Randolph House where you will learn all about their famed residents and sample the hot chocolate at R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse. There is a dedicated play area for kids (think games, animals and demonstrations) called Patriots at Play and my daughter really loved her time there.

If you’re looking for a fun activity for the whole family, the horse and carriage ride was a big hit with our group.

The best way to get around is by foot but shuttle buses are also available for ticket holders. Note: we were looking forward to the Governor’s Palace hedge maze but it was closed due to storm damage. Tip: Don’t miss the 5 pm Fife and Drum ceremony held nightly behind the courthouse and daily cannon firings.

Shop in The Square

Merchant’s Square, adjacent to Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area, is a great spot to grab a snack, take a coffee break, people watch, listen to music and shop for souvenirs at local merchants and boutiques. There are several great restaurants and spots for a quick meal (see below) so try to visit mid-day or after 5pm. For ice cream, my vote goes to Kilwins (try the Georgia peach!), for sweet treats, the Wythe Candy & Gourmet Shop blew my daughter away with their candy and chocolate selections and for nut lovers, The Peanut Shop is amazing for snacks and gifts. Tip: There is a visitor center here where you can book activities and purchase Colonial Williamsburg tickets.

Savor Southern Specialties

For a small town, the dining scene in Williamsburg, VA does not disappoint. We loved eating dinner by candlelight in the historic taverns with giant napkins around our necks. We also enjoyed eating made-to-order sandwiches, gigantic pancakes and gourmet meals. Last but not least, we discovered the most amazing made-to-order donut shop where you can choose from dozens of glazes, toppings and sprinkles! Here are some of my favorites: Christiana Campbell’s Tavern for an upscale tavern experience (don’t miss the crab cakes and local beers), sandwiches and picnic fare from The Cheese Shop, famous for their Virginia ham, homemade bread and gourmet cheese, The Fat Canary for innovative regional cuisine including a stunning veggie plate for my vegan husband, Astronomical Pancake House for gigantic pancakes and waffles galore (try the apple caramel pancakes), and my personal favorite, Duck Donuts where you will find the tastiest (and prettiest) donuts in town. Tip: Be sure to try the Cheese Shop’s addictive house dressing.  You’re welcome.

Where to Stay in Williamsburg, Virginia

There are many family-friendly hotels in the Greater Williamsburg area at every price point. For our vacation, proximity and ease were the priority so we chose the Williamsburg Lodge which is located across the street from Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area. We had two adjoining rooms and my daughter loved getting to bunk with grandma while safely being able to run back and forth to our room.

The colonial decor made us feel like we were back in time while the modern amenities kept us caffeinated and connected (yay for free wifi). The staff was very accommodating and the dedicated concierge is part of Colonial Williamsburg so you can plan your entire trip and pick up tickets in the hotel lobby. We didn’t have time to indulge but the Lodge shares amenities with the famed Williamsburg Inn including their indoor and outdoor pools, fitness center, The Spa of Colonial Williamsburg and Golden Horseshoe Golf Club.

The hotel also offers a Lil’ Patriots Kids Club for parents who want some alone time. Since we all had different activity levels, The Lodge was a great home base as we could split apart and meet back in the rooms on our Colonial Williamsburg days. Early risers could grab coffee and muffins before dawn while others enjoyed Tradition’s filling buffet breakfasts.

And, after a long day of exploring, we all loved sipping (note the fancy scotch selection) and noshing (comfort food, casual appetizers and healthy salads) by the warm fireplace in Sweet Tea & Barley (don’t miss their live entertainment).

Tip: There are several Colonial Williamsburg ticketed events for Colonial Williamsburg hotel guests so be sure to ask for details. In addition, guests receive largely discounted tickets at Colonial Williamsburg for their entire stay which is not widely advertised so don’t buy them in advance.

Greater Williamsburg really has something for everyone. I especially loved the way my daughter took in all the live history lessons while having fun at the same time. Toy Story Land, a brand new 11-acre land based on the Pixar favorite, is coming to Disney World this June and this is huge news for kids and adults! I’ve been busy getting the scoop on this project and today I’m sharing everything you need to know about Disney’s latest Hollywood Studios addition.

I first heard about Toy Story Land at a New York City press event in February where I learned about the coming attractions (new rides, oversized colorful toys and innovative food, oh my!), met the Toy Story characters and took a virtual reality ride on the new Slinky Dog rollercoaster. So much fun!

Last month, I attended the Disney Social Media Moms Conference (#DisneySMMC*) in Orlando where I got a chance to meet Walt Disney Imagineering Art Director for Toy Story Land, Ryan Wineinger and learned all about the planning and details. According to Ryan, Toy Story Land will feature Andy’s toys spread throughout the park and visitors will be able to interact with the toys and yes, this means plenty of fun photo-ops! I also got a sneak peek of Mickey and Minnie’s new Toy Story Land outfits. Aren’t they cute?

Toy Story Land Rides

Soon to be a family favorite, the Sinky Dog Rollercoaster is perfect for smaller kids (minimum height 38 inches) and adults alike. The colorful Slinky dog car zips around the track, offering great views of Toy Story Land.

The Alien Swirling Saucers are modeled after the famed toy that Andy won at Pizza Planet. Guests ride rocket ships as fun alien toys ride space saucers while the claw looms above.

Toy Story Midway Mania is one of my daughter’s favorite rides so she’s excited that it will be prominently featured in Toy Story Land. This is a very popular ride so I’m glad to report they are increasing capacity with a new third track. There is also going to be a new entrance, based on the Toy Story Mania game box.

Toy Story Land will feature Woody’s Lunch Box where guests can grab quick meals and snacks including Mini Babybel (the official snack cheese of Walt Disney World) and old-fashioned soda floats.

1) Holiday Windows and Displays in New York City

People wait in line to see NYC’s famous holiday department store windows and in-store displays so try to go during the week or early on weekends. My favorites are Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdales, Macy’s and Saks Fifth Avenue. Be sure to step inside Henri Bendel, Bergdorf and Saks for some the most elaborate holiday displays in town.

2) Ice Skating in New York City

The Rink at Rockefeller Center is the classic choice with the best holiday vibes in town.  Central Park is another option for ice skating with gorgeous backdrops. Winter Village at Bryant Park offers free ice skating right in the center of midtown. The Rink At Brookfield features ice skating in an outdoor plaza and overlooks the Hudson River.

3) Saks Fifth Avenue Light Show

Located right across from the Rockefeller Christmas tree, the Saks Fifth Avenue light show is a must see. Watching the 10-story-tall theatrical light show with the accompanying music will make the whole family say “wow” out loud.  If you’ve got Disney fans, don’t miss this year’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs themed holiday windows. Shows are on the 5th Avenue facade every 30 minutes starting at dusk.

4) Rockefeller Center in New York City

Rockefeller Center is the center of NYC’s holiday activities. From the world famous Christmas tree to the decked out Channel Gardens and shops galore, every holiday visitor comes here. Top of the Rock offers great views of the city’s skyline and kids will love visiting the American Girl Place in its newest location and city’s famed Lego Store.

New for the 2017 holiday season, Santa is making advance appointments in Macy’s Santaland at Herald Square so definitely sign up for a 30-minute window before you visit. The famed 13,000 square foot Christmas wonderland is super popular so try to go midweek or early morning.

6) Holiday Markets Galore

New York’s holiday markets rival those found in Europe with culinary treats, great gifts and special events. The most famous holiday markets are located in Union Square Market, and Bryant Park.

7) New York Botanical Garden Holiday Train Show

Head to Brooklyn for the New York Botanical Garden Holiday Train Show,  where families can watch model trains zip past more than 150 miniature New York landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge and Rockefeller Center as they travel along a half-mile track. This is a great option for a multigenerational outing.

8) The Rockettes at the Radio City Christmas Spectacular

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love seeing the Radio City Christmas Spectacular starring the famed Rockettes. A holiday fixture since 1933, the spectacular now features techno-tricks, amazing costumes and backdrops and super talented dancers who really steal the show.

You can’t visit New York City for the holidays without seeing a Broadway show (or two). For 2017, families will find a good variety of options including The Lion King, Aladdin, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, School of Rock, The Play That Goes Wrong and Sponge Bob SquarePants. If you’re not picky, get last minute rush tickets (when box office opens for day of shows) or try the TKTS booth.

10) Family Friendly Shows and Attractions in New York City

There are so many family-friendly shows and attractions for families in a variety of price points. Some popular choices for tots are Gazillion Bubble Show, The Hungry Caterpillar and Central Park’s Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre. For older kids, The Ride, Tea at the Plaza, Gulliver’s Gate, Big Apple Circus, Blue Man Group and various Nutcracker performances are all great options. For a magic show the whole family will love, don’t miss Believe in Magic at The New Victory Theater.

School may just have started but I’m already gathering ideas for summer vacations. At the recent Momtrends Night Out, I had the chance to meet with the Visit Williamsburg team and today I’m sharing my picks for the Top 10 Family Friendly Activities in Williamsburg, Virginia.

With my third-grade history buff daughter who loved our Charleston getaway and my College of William & Mary graduate husband who loves anything Virginia, it is just a matter of time before we get down there to check these out firsthand!

I was truly amazed at the variety of adventures that are available but I purposefully picked a mix of excitement, culinary treats, cultural activities and some R&R to keep all three of us happily entertained.

No surprise that well-known Colonial Williamsburg tops my list of family-friendly attractions. Choose from more than 20 guided tours (included in the admission price) or explore the historic sights at your own pace. Go back in time with reenactments, savor tavern fare (don’t miss the “gambols” at Josiah Chowning’s Tavern), check out the shops of Merchants Square, try your hands at candle making, golf, go undercover as a spy, savor sweet treats at the Raleigh Tavern Bakery and so much more. Insider tip: Don’t miss the life-size maze in the gardens behind the Governor’s Palace.

Our family loves amusement parks so a day at Busch Gardens is a must. From daring roller coasters and thrill rides to animal shows, seasonal events and Broadway-style shows, there really is something for everyone in the family. Year after year, this is voted one of the most beautiful theme parks and the grounds are divided by countries similar to Epcot.

3) Williamsburg Tasting Trail

Did you know that Williamsburg Winery is one of the top wineries in the country?  Plan a low-key day exploring the area’s tasting trail and sample the areas famed wines, micro-brewed beer and distilled spirits and enjoy family-friendly special events. Don’t miss the newest addition, Billsburg Brewery which features artisan craft beers and Jamestown River views. I sampled a few varieties including Strawberry and honey-based drinks at the Momtrend’s Event and they were delicious.

4) Historic Jamestowne

Learn about Jamestown’s 92-year run as the capital of Virginia through archeology tours and museums and step back in time as you follow in the footsteps of Capt. John Smith and Pocahontas. Enjoy lunch overlooking the James River and be sure to stop at the Glasshouse of 1608 for glassmaking demonstrations.

5) Water Country USA

We’re fans of Splish Splash and Kalahari so I know Water Country USA, Virginia’s largest water park, will be one of the highlights of our trip. With more than 40 water rides and attractions (including this mom’s favorite, the lazy river) and KIDsiderate play areas, this is a great spot to spend a day.

6) The College of William & Mary

Because my husband (and both his siblings) went to school here, we will definitely spend some time checking out the college’s famed Colonial campus located at the edge of Colonial Williamsburg’s historic district. You won’t want to miss the President’s House, Sir Christopher Wren Building and Muscarelle Museum of Art. Grab a sandwich (my husband recommends the combo with house dressing) from the nearby Cheese Shop of Williamsburg and enjoy a low key picnic as you watch the students run from class to class. Fun fact: The Wren Building anchors one end of the main street in Colonial Williamsburg and it is exactly a mile to the Colonial Capital at the other end of the historic district.

The NEW American Revolution Museum at Yorktown is a must see which allows visitors to experience the impact of the Revolution through an introductory film and expansive gallery exhibits plus kids can fire a real cannon! Be sure to visit the three ships at Jamestown Settlement, Yorktown Battlefield and savor the area’s riverfront charm. Tip: If you go, skip the highways and drive the scenic Colonial Parkway.

All that amusement park time needs to be balanced out with some relaxation so I recommend checking out the area’s spas.  From a pampering couples massage at Colonial Williamsburg Spa or The Spa at Kingsmill to the Scoops Kid Spa at Great Wolf Lodge, the options are varied.

From biking in Colonial Williamsburg to hiking and kayaking at York River State Park, golf galore and treetop zip adventures at Go Ape Freedom Park, outdoor enthusiasts will have plenty of options to choose.

10) Family Bonding Time

Make sure to add in some time to kick back and enjoy some family time. My personal picks for this include a sunset cruise with Jamestown Discovery Boat Tours, an in-theater dining experience at Movie Tavern, exploring the waterfront at Riverwalk and checking out the area’s woodlands and wetlands.
