Family Travel 101: Top 10 …

March 26, 2014 By admin

Traveling alone is simple.  Traveling with kids is a production!  Here are my Top 10 Packing Tips for Traveling with Kids.  Here’s hoping they make your trip go a little bit smoother…

Family travel, Top 10, Packing Tips, Traveling with Kids, Travel, Family Travel

Family Travel 101: Top 10 Packing Tips for Traveling with Kids

1) Put everything essential in your carry-on bag.  Basically, NEVER EVER put jewelry, electronics, and chargers, loveys, or medicine in your checked luggage.  Also, if something is vital to your kid’s happiness and you can’t buy it at your travel destination, leave it home or pack it in your carry-on.  I’m talking must-have toothbrush, special headband, favorite stuffed animal, etc.

2) Dress everyone in comfy outfits and bring a change of clothes for everyone in your carry-on bag.  If your kids are close in age you can probably get by with an extra top and leggings but no matter what, bring extra undies and diapers/burp cloths.  Air sickness, spills, and other accidents are bound to happen and you’ll be super sorry if you have to walk around smelling like puke or pee.

3) Oversized plastic bags and Ziplocs are your best friend.  Pack pajamas in one air compression bag and socks/undies/diapers in another and squeeze till flat.  Depending on where we’re going, I usually use Ziplocs for my daughter’s individual outfits or like items (bathing suits, tops, bottoms, etc.).  For going home, you can use these bags to keep the dirty laundry away from the clean things.

4) Charge all phones and electronic devices before you get to the airport and bring extra batteries and backup power chargers for the plane.  Always pack chargers in your carry-on bag.

5) Keep toiletries to a minimum unless someone in your family has allergy issues.  Make use of the hotel bath amenities but do remember your favorite toothpastes and must-have essentials like detangling spray and sunscreen.  If you’re not checking luggage, check out 3FLOZ and All Travel Sizes for travel sized products, travel kits and squeezable travel tubes.

6) Bring any and all medicine you might need especially if you are traveling out of the country.  If your kids are in the middle of a prescription, take the entire dose with you in case your flight home gets canceled. If you’re traveling with little kids, always pack a thermometer, first aid kit and children’s fever reducer.

7) If kids are old enough, let them be in charge of packing their carry-on bag.  Make sure they bring toys, arts and crafts, snacks, electronics, headphones and anything else that will keep them happily entertained.  My four-year old loves to take her Trunki – Trixie Pink as a carry on because it doubles as a ride-on toy (shown above).

8) Bring along a LOT of healthy snacks and your child’s favorite water bottle.  Easy to pack snacks include nuts, cheese sticks, raisin boxes, granola bars, sliced fruit, sandwiches, pretzels for older kids and squeeze fruit pouches, baby food, yogurt bites and puffs for smaller kids. I’ve never been stopped from bringing a water bottle for my daughter through airport security but they do ask to test it.  Don’t forget bottles and extra formula and bibs for the babes if needed.

9) Bring along family friendly games.  Small travel-friendly games like Melissa & Doug Travel Memory Game, magic pen/books and coloring books/crayons and cards are good non-electronic options.  I always pack a surprise toy or two in my suitcase like Legos, Play Doh or bead necklace kits to keep my daughter busy in the hotel. If you’re going somewhere beachy, bring along beach toys which can double as bath toys.

10) Pack a list of all important information in case you lose your phone or wallet.  Make a xerox for a family member not traveling with you along with a copy of your itinerary/car/hotel details.  The list should include passport information (if traveling abroad), drivers license details, credit card information, important phone numbers and email addresses and any medical records you might need during your trip.

Bon voyage!

Spotlight on NYC: Tours for …

March 19, 2014 By admin

New York City kids are exposed to a lot of amazing cultural experiences and its great how many of the top NYC museums cater to their tiniest visitors.  If you’ve got a 4-year old, you’ve got to check out the Museum of Modern Art’s (MOMA) complimentary Tours for 4’s weekend family gallery talks.

Globetrotting Mommy: Spotlight on NYC: Tours for 4s at MOMA

Tickets are distributed at 10 am on a first-come, first-served basis so arrive on time.  Participants are given tokens to check coats in lockers which is a nice touch.  We visited in February for the Breaking the Mold: Materials and Techniques gallery talk and our group had about 10 kids and their parents.  Our tour guide Shannon reviewed the rules for visiting the museum and we were on our way.  We stopped at a few exhibits and the kids were asked for their thoughts along the way as the guide explained about the artwork and artists like Isa Genzken.  My daughter’s favorite part was the age appropriate art projects they got to do on the floor involving designs and textures.  The tour lasts about an hour and then you are free to explore on your own.  Be sure to check out the Moma Art Lab where you can play, read, experiment and create your own stop-animation movies.

Upcoming weekend themes for the Tours for 4s program include:

March – Shape Shifting

April – Faces and Figures:  People and Portraits

May – From Furry to Feathered:  Animals in Art

If your kids are older, check out the MOMA’s A Closer Look for Kids and Tours for Tweens programs.

If you’ll be visiting NYC with kids this spring or summer, these programs would be a nice addition to your itinerary.  The MOMA is centrally located near a lot of family friendly attractions and kid-friendly stores including Central Park, Rockefeller Center, FAO Schwartz, LEGO Store, American Girl Store and the Eloise Shop at the Plaza.

Cool Apps Tuesday: Get around …

March 18, 2014 By admin

Looking for a cool app to help you find places and information when you’re home or away?  You’ll love AroundMe, a cool app that helps you find the closest restaurant, movie theatre, bank, and more by just using your fingertips.

cool app, around me, around me app, app for travel, cool app for travel

Cool App Tuesday: Get around town with the Around Me App

Categories include Banks/ATM, Bars, Coffee Shops, Deals, Gas Stations, Hospitals, Hotels, Local Guides, Movie Theaters, Movies, Nearby, Parking, Pharmacies, Pubs, Restaurants, Supermarkets, Taxis, and Theaters.  There is also a favorites category where you can store your most used hotspots.

This app is super fast and when you click on a category, you get an array of listings and details.  For example, when you select movies, it lists movies and theaters where that selection is playing.  If you click on a movie title, it takes you to a synapsis page where you can read movie reviews, watch trailers, see showtimes and buy tickets.  Its similar for the hotel and restaurant tabs as well.

Getting lost is a thing of the past because it integrates with Google Maps and Foursquare and shows you exactly how to find the place you’ve selected. Make dinner reservations, book a hotel, buy theater tickets, get gas and find a pharmacy all in a few easy swipes.

AroundMe is one of the best free apps I’ve tried on my iPhone for local searches.  This is true lifesaver when you’re traveling to an unfamiliar town or even at home.  Give it a shot at home and see what you think. And if you hate the adds you can pay the $2.99 for the ad-free version.

Adventure Awaits: Paddington …

March 11, 2014 By admin

Do you remember Paddington Bear who was found in London’s Paddington Railway Station sitting on his suitcase? I always loved him and his adorable little blue coat and note “Please look after this bear. Thank you.” The talking teddy bear has been busy since I was a kid and his latest project is a worldwide collaboration with babyGap.

Available for a very limited time, the collection (sizes 0-24-months) is available at all babyGap stores as well as a special pop-up shop on Paddington Station in London and two in-store Paddington branded boutiques in Gap’s New York and Tokyo flagship stores. The Paddington Bear spring collection features some adorable rainy day outfits, comfy clothes and red, white and blue classics. Here are some of my favorites.

I think these would be adorable on any marmalade loving kids or teddy bears and would make great baby shower gifts. They’re selling the book too which is a great addition for any globetrotting baby’s library.signature

Photography tips: Dress the …

March 10, 2014 By admin

Did you ever try to take a photo of your kid and have them not want to look at the camera? Me too. Imagine if you could find a way to combat that especially on vacation when you’re trying to capture your kid and the scenery for a once in a lifetime shot. If you’ve got a daughter, I’ve got an idea for you — matching Doll & Me Fashion Sets from Our Generation doll.

Photography tips: Dress the part with Our Generation Doll & Me Fashion Set

My daughter loves her dolls, stuffed animals and beloved Pinky, a raggedy pink lovey and often brings them with her when we’re traveling. One day, I surprised her with Our Generation’s Hally and the “One Smart Cookie” set. She loved the doll naturally, but when I showed her the next surprise – a matching Our Generation Doll & Me Fashion Set – her face lit up.  The pink tutu skirt is just my girly girl’s style and the gray tank top and shrug sweater add just the right amount of big girl sophistication. She couldn’t wait to dress up in matching outfits with her doll and show off their cuteness.  We ran across the street to the park and I said smile for the camera and she did just that.  She wanted to make sure I got photos of just Hally too because she looked so pretty.

Globetrotting Mommy Photography tips: Dress the part with Our Generation Doll & Me Fashion Set

I think this is a great way to get kids excited about an upcoming family photo shoot and holiday pictures as well as vacation shots.

The dolls are sold at Target individually ($23) or in deluxe sets ($32) with accessories and a book.  Our Hally deluxe set came with a selection of clothes including a dressy school girl outfit and a casual gym set with sneakers as well as fun accessories like a backpack, notebook, report card, fortune cookie and a “One Smart Cookie” chapter book and bookmark. There are so many different styles and accessories available and they are all so affordable compared to so many other brands.

There are several Doll & Me Fashion sets for the 4-6 set and they’re just $30 which is a great price.  From dressy party dresses to sundresses there are some great options for the upcoming spring and summer holidays. I think they’d also be cute for sisters and cousins who want to coordinate their outfits and a fun gift idea for any little girly girl you know.

And if you want to take your doll on a trip with you, check out the fun selection of Our Generation doll carriers.

Floating Summer Camp Option …

January 21, 2014 By admin

Here in New York, January means time to sign up for summer camp!  If you’re looking for a fun and adventurous camp experience for your globetrotting teens, you’ll want to check out Summer Camps aboard the Tall Ship Oliver Hazard Perry.

(Photo credits: 1) Sixteen-year-old Anna Spring aboard the Norwegian Tall Ship Sørlandet this past summer during the Tall Ships America’s TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Series in the Great Lakes (Photo Credit Tall Ships America/Angela Deluce). 2) Kids learn “the ropes” aboard a Tall Ship (Photo Credit Tall Ships America/Matt Maples).)

Teens can choose from seven weeks of adventures featuring itineraries throughout the North East (think MA, NH, RI and NY). Each session features 30-34 students and 15 professional crew members aboard the newly built SSV Oliver Hazard Perry.

Students will take the helm of the 500-ton Tall Ship, learn to work as a team with others as they hoist and brace the yards on the 130-foot tall rig, and apply acquired seamanship and navigation skills to guide the ship’s course on a voyage of discovery.  In addition, they will witness the natural magic of the ocean and its inhabitants—think spectacular night skies, marine phosphorescence, whales breaching and dolphins at play! Newport, Nantucket, Boston, Portsmouth and Greenport are among the historically rich ports the ship will visit.

Camp price for six days/nights is $1,600 with a 10% discount for booking by the end of January. Check out the entire schedule online.

If I was a teenager I’d be asking my mom for her credit card information right now…

Family friendly highlights for the January 17-19 events include:

  • Visit Philadelphia™ is providing free admission for up to 1,250 visitors to the new Benjamin Franklin Museum all birthday weekend long. At the museum, history buffs can explore Franklin’s life and accomplishments through interactive activities, artifacts, video presentations and more.
  • A fountain of inspirational quotes, Franklin left a legacy of sayings that are repeated dozens of times each day. But which are people’s favorites? Visit Philadelphia™ will find out the answer to this question in daily Facebook polls that encourage fans to vote for a quote now through January 17.  Visit Philadelphia’s Facebook page will post two quotes daily and each Facebook follower who votes for their favorite will be entered to win a Franklin-themed getaway prize package, including hotel accommodations, admission to various Franklin-themed attractions, gift certificates for Franklin-inspired meals and more.
  • On January 17, visitors can get their photo taken with a life-size statute of Ben in the National Constitution Center‘s Signers’ Hall, sign his birthday card and then enjoy some birthday cake. In honor of Franklin’s 308th birthday, guests also enjoy $3.08 off general admission tickets.
  • More than three centuries after his birth, Franklin remains ageless in his many portraits. Ben buffs can join a National Park Service ranger for the Happy Birthday Benjamin Franklin program in the Portrait Gallery at the Second Bank of the United States. It highlights photos of Franklin and his contemporaries and touches on how their contributions continue to impact the world today.
  • At the Historic Philadelphia Center, revelers can meet Ben in person, listen to stories about the famed American and partake in other family-friendly activities during Ben Franklin’s Birthday Celebration. Free birthday cake at 1:00 p.m. on January 17.

Philadelphia is one of my favorite cities on the East Coast.  Visit Greater Philadelphia’s official visitor website for more details and to play your getaway.

This rotating globe comes with a built-in dry-erase marker in the axis so you’ll be able to jot down your thoughts at a moments notice.  Place it in the kitchen for grocery lists, playroom for reminders or the bedroom for those late night thoughts and you’ll never forget anything again.  Well, no guarantees of course but its a start…

This would make a great gift for families, kids and globetrotters who want to jot down packing lists, important contact information or flight information.

Globetrotting Toys: …

December 18, 2013 By admin

It’s a plane, its a submarine and everything in between! If you’re looking for a fun building toy that will get your budding pilots’s imagination flowing, the Build-a-ma-jigs Submaplane from B. toys is sure to please.

My daughter and I tested it out and we had so much fun coming up with different configurations for the interchangeable pieces. It surprised me that her favorite part was the working drill (complete with interchangeable bits) but that just proves that girly girls can handle power tools. Just check out my preschooler concentrating on that drill in princess fairy garb of course. Focus, focus, focus…

Globetrotting Toys: Build-a-ma-jigs Submaplane from B. toys review

I’ve written about how much I love B. toys in the past and this one does not disappoint in quality or function. The pieces are large enough for small hands to easily handle (but not too small that you will be injured by stepping on one) and the parts really do move, open and spin. I love that this toy is unisex, compatible with the other B. toys Build-a-ma-jig sets and basically throws any building rules right out the window.

I think this would be a great holiday gift for all families with kids (best for ages 3-8).  I also think this would be a great choice for all those class birthday parties. Teaching kids that creative masterpieces have no limits is really the best present you can give or get. B. toys can be found at all Target stores, online and at specialty toy shops throughout the United States and Canada. To find a store near you visit the B. Toy store locator.
