Top five Vacation or …

May 5, 2014 By admin

Looking to do something fun for Mother’s Day weekend at home or away?  Act fast and book one of these five options.

For moms who love music:

Globetrotting Mommy, Langham Place, Fifth Avenue, New York, Tunes with Tina, NYC, Mother's Day, Brunch Ideas

Globetrotting Mommy Mother’s Day Ideas: Tunes with Tina at Langham Place, Fifth Avenue

Mother’s Day Brunch is always a win but Tunes with Tina at NYC’s Langham Place, Fifth Avenue is a family friendly sing-along brunch that ensures mom will enjoy a civilized meal while the kiddies are entertained.  Families can join in as Tina deVaron sings a mix of pop hits, Disney Classics and other family favorites.  Chef David Vandenabeele’s menu features Belgian Waffles, Breakfast Pizzas, Quiches, Breakfast Sandwiches, Scotch Egg and more as well as a selection of desserts and sweets. So basically, mom can enjoy yummy brunch and a mimosa or two while the kiddies sing Let it Go to their heart’s delight.  That’s a win-win in my book. Be sure to bring your video camera because Measure Lounge is a much better backdrop than your toy-filled living room.

If you’re looking for a family getaway filled with fun adventures and dancing, famed kids musician Moey is welcoming fans with a Mother’s Day Getaway Package at Vermont’s Wilberton Inn.  The package includes a Saturday Night Family Disco Party, Farm Fresh Mother’s Day Brunch and a Mother’s Day Moey Concert.  The inn features a mix of bed-and-breakfast rooms as well as cottages and a 14-bedroom mansion making this a great pick for family reunions.  Rates start at $150 per night for Mother’s Day weekend so pack your princess dresses and boas and head on over.

For moms who love pampering:

Mom can retreat to the beach for some well-deserved R&R with the Girlfriend Getaway Package at the Grand Lucayan on Grand Bahama Island.  The getaway includes a two-night stay in an Ocean View Room, daily breakfast at Willy Broadleaf, manicures and pedicures at the Senses Spa and poolside cocktails at Hammerheads Bar.  I can’t think of a more relaxing way to spend Mother’s Day. Can you? Rates start at $211 per night (mention code GIRLS).

Globetrotting Mommy Mother’s Day Ideas: theBalm Mom travel package at Stanford Court

Stanford Court in San Francisco is offering theBalm Mom travel package where moms will enjoy a visit to theBalm Cosmetics’ new flagship store located in the hip Mission District.  Moms will be greeted with a glass of champagne before they enjoy a deluxe makeover complete with a recorded take-home iPad tutorial video demonstrating the step-by-step makeup application process.  Moms will also receive eyebrow waxes and select products from theBalm’s cosmetic line, including customized 9-well eye shadow palettes from the “Eye Shadow Bar” and more.  Aside from the pampering, guests will enjoy overnight accommodations at Stanford Court, complimentary breakfast for two at Aurea Lounge and town car transportation to and from the store.  This sounds like a great mother/daughter getaway to me.

For moms who love getting crafty:

Make Meaning is one of my favorite spots to get crafty in NYC because they offer up so many different types of projects (soaps, ceramics, cookies, etc.).  For Mother’s Day, four of their stores (Upper East and Upper West in NYC and Legacy Place Scottsdale Quarter in Arizona and Thousand Oaks in California) will be featuring Tea-Tin & Cookie Decorating sessions for kids of all ages.  For just $35, moms and kids can personalize tea tins and decorate cookies with step-by-step personalized instruction.  Once completed, you’ll select three teas for the tin making it a great gift for any mom or grandma.

If you still need a Mother’s Day present, check out my Mother’s Day Gift Guide.

We’ll Always Have Paris: …

April 22, 2014 By admin

I don’t have too much free time for reading but when I was offered a review copy of We’ll Always Have Paris: A Mother/Daughter Memoir I just knew I’d want to check it out.

One of my all-time favorite trips was a Parisian getaway I went on with my mom where we had so much fun exploring Paris’ fabulous sights, boutiques, amazing restaurants and tourist attractions.  I can still remember our picnic lunches in the park, walking down the streets with flower-shaped gelato cones, eating crepes, croissants and the most amazing Apple Tarte Tatin and a never-ending meal at a fancy schmancy restaurant with more courses than I’ve ever seen.  Did I mention, we’re big foodies??

Globetrotting Mommy, We'll Always Have Paris, Memoir, Jennifer Coburn, Travel, Travel Memoir, Mother daughter travel

Globetrotting Mommy “We’ll Always Have Paris”

In the book, Jennifer processes her dad’s death while she navigates her way through motherhood and around Europe with her daughter for eight summers. As a traveler and a mom, I really enjoyed making my way through Jennifer Coburn’s journeys and I hope to do something similar with my daughter some day. Their adventures are full of colorful locals, visits to familiar tourist sights and many unexpected moments.  Jennifer reminds me of one of my funniest friends, the one you always want to sit next to at a dinner party, and her stories warmed my heart.  I especially enjoyed reading as she questioned the challenges of parenting and carefully navigated the line between mom and friend.  You’ll want to buckle up and enjoy the ride as Katie matures and Jennifer learns to go with the flow.

When Jennifer offered to share some of their favorite memories with my readers, I said yes!

Here they are below.  I think its a great idea to chronicle your favorite travel memories before they fade away.  I’m definitely going to start doing that more and more.  It would be cute to include some of these memories into a photo book for a great trip keepsake.

We’ll Always Have Paris…Jennifer and Katie’s Favorite Memories

Trip One—Paris and London (2005)

Jennifer: I was terrified that I wouldn’t be able to navigate my way through Paris alone with a child. After a rough first day, Katie and I were sitting at a café near the Eiffel Tower where the menu was very different and dogs sat at their owners’ feet. When the waiter brought Katie’s hamburger, it came with a fried egg on top of it. She shrugged and said, “I guess in Paris, breakfast comes with your lunch.” I knew then that she would do just fine abroad—and in life. I also felt slightly guilty that my eight-year-old was my new role model in life.

Katie: We went to this old-timey bookstore called Shakespeare and Company right across the river from Notre Dame. There were tons of books, cozy places to read, and tucked away were cots where people could sleep if they didn’t have a hotel. I begged my mom to have a sleepover there and she said yes! She didn’t love it as much as I did, but spending the night in a bookstore was my idea of heaven.

Trip Two—Italy (2008)

Jennifer: When Katie and I arrived in Rome, our first interaction was with a taxi driver who promptly swindled me out of fifty euros. Later that evening, we had dinner at a deli near the Spanish Steps, and when the owner heard about our bad luck with the cab driver, he fed us every delicious dish in his place—pizza, grilled eggplant, mozzarella, artichoke salad, you name it. His generosity reminded me that there are always more kind people than crooked ones anywhere you go in the world.

Katie: In Venice my mom and I had just gotten soaked in a rainstorm and all I wanted was to have hot chocolate on our balcony that overlooked the Grand Canal. No one understood that we wanted a drink to carry out, so my mom convinced a restaurant owner to let us take the mug of hot chocolate he’d made for me. He was really upset, but my mom can be pretty persuasive. The taste of hot chocolate and the crazy beautiful view of the water after a storm were perfect together. (And the restaurant guy was super nice when my mom returned the mug.)

Trip Three—Spain (2011)

Jennifer: Finding the secret order of cookie-baking nuns in Madrid was no easy feat, but when we did, it was a great adventure. We rang a buzzer and made our way through the maze of the convent, following signs that read “Dulces” taped next to pictures of Madonna and Child. We arrived at an empty room with a lazy Susan that had a chain thick enough to restrain King Kong. From behind the wall, a nun with a frighteningly stern voice barked at us as we used our junior high school Spanish to buy cookies. Totally worth it! They were the best orange treats we will probably ever eat.

Katie: My mom and I were in the garden of the Alhambra in Granada and I was looking at this patch of yellow flowers. A minute later, I heard singing, so I turned around to see my mom standing in the middle of a group of Korean women and singing—in Korean! She told me that her Korean friend in elementary school taught her the song and she’d heard it so many times, she never forgot it. They all taught me the song (and the hand movements) and we sang it together. My mom can make friends anywhere.

Trip Four—Amsterdam and Paris (2013)

Jennifer: My father wrote a song that was popular in Holland in the ’70s, so when Katie and I went to Amsterdam, we looked for the record in an old vinyl shop called Second Life Music. She found the record immediately, which the store owner offered to play while he looked up the song’s history in his music bible. It was lovely, surreal, and bittersweet, since I can never share this memory with my father.

Katie: Some parents tell their kids not to do drugs, but my mom showed me when she ate a “space-cake” in Amsterdam. I hated to laugh at her since she was obviously feeling really guilty, but there were moments when she was just so silly, we both had to crack up. There were some really funny things that night, but mostly I remember my mom feeling bad because she ate way too much. She pretty much convinced me that this wasn’t something I ever wanted to try.

Have you ever taken a mother/daughter trip?  Mother’s day is coming up and there are few better gifts than a vacation…If not, We’ll Always Have Paris: A Mother/Daughter Memoir would be a great gift.

Family Travel 101: Top 10 Tips …

April 16, 2014 By admin

If you haven’t heard, multi-generational travel is the hottest trend in family travel.  At the New York Times Travel Show seminar “Trending in Family Travel: Multi-generational Travel Trends” hosted by Kyle McCarthy of Family Travel Forum, I got the latest scoop on this hot topic.

I’ve taken many multi-generational trips with my daughter and I definitely think its a win-win all around.  Here we are last year on a Disney cruise.

Globetrotting Mommy Family Travel 101: Top 10 Tips for Multigenerational Travel

If you’re planning a getaway with your parents or in-laws, siblings or grandparents, here are Top 10 Tips for Successful Multi-Generational Travel.

1) Try to plan as far in advance as possible to make the trip as smooth and affordable as possible.  Book early to secure the best flights and hotel prices and be sure to use online comparison booking sites.  If you’re traveling oversees, be sure to look into kid fares available on many foreign carriers.  Try to travel during shoulder season and look for promotions where kids can stay and eat for free.  Don’t forget to ask for AAA or senior discounts.

2) Discuss the trip budget in advance and agree on who will pay for what to avoid any uncomfortable moments.  Be super clear about each family’s financial responsibility and either break it down by category (one family covers air, another covers hotel, etc.) or agree to split things evenly.

3) Discuss parenting and discipline issues with in-laws before traveling.  If you don’t want your kids eating certain foods or participating in certain activities, be sure to let everyone know ahead of time.   Be clear on babysitting responsibilities and try to give each set of parents a kid-free day or night (or more).

4) Consider renting a home so travelers can have space, privacy and the chance to eat on their own schedule.  This is especially nice for families with little kids where the children can eat early and go to bed and the adults can enjoy a leisurely meal without worrying about babysitters.

5) Plan a trip that is important to your family’s history like exploring your ancestry or celebrating a family member’s milestone birthday.  This could mean a trip to a grandparent’s home town, a parent’s alma mater, etc.  This is a great way to bond a family and create a lifetime of memories, especially if it entails exploring a new culture.

6) Organize a trip that highlights your family’s passions or interests.  Maybe you want to attend a sporting event like the Olympics or Super Bowl or visit a destination where the whole family can learn how to fly fish, ski, cook, etc.

7) Consider visiting National Park Service parks where travelers will find an array of family friendly activities and affordable rates.

8) Make sure to build in some down time.  Little ones and grandparents will need time to nap and recharge their batteries while teens will want some alone time.  Everyone will appreciate a little time to relax on the beach or explore new towns at their own pace but be sure to have some “hang out” time where family members can play board games, decorate cookies and partake in other bonding activities.

9) All-inclusive resorts and cruises are great options for large families with active big eaters.  They are also great for families where not all siblings have children since there will be an array of adult activities.

10) Treats and bribes work well for kids of all ages.  This could mean ice cream and park visits for small kids or shopping trips and special dining options for older ones.

Bon voyage…

Fun Food Friday: Taste the …

April 11, 2014 By admin

I’ve never met a kid who doesn’t love bananas but traveling with them is a messy proposition (for the fruit and the kid).  We recently had a chance to taste test Barnana’s Banana Bites and they are a great alternative to traveling with bananas.  The tasty (gluten free and non-GMO) treats are made from pure organic bananas and packaged in small 3.5 ounce servings making them great for eating on a plane or playground.

Fun Food Friday: Taste the Tropics with Barnana Banana Bites

Available in Original Chewy Banana Bites or Chocolate Chewy Banana Bites, they offer up more than 20 vitamins and minerals (400-800 mg of Potassium!).  The only one ingredient is pure organic banana and the Chewy Chocolate Banana Bites are covered in 54% organic cocoa, which contains the beneficial flavonoids of dark chocolate.

While I liked both flavors, my daughter would only try the chocolate covered ones (surprise, surprise!).  They are not the prettiest snacks you’ve ever seen so I’m not going to post photos but they’re a healthy snack choice with no additives or preservatives so don’t hate them because their looks.  And in the world of banana snacks there aren’t many sugar free options so kudos to Barnana for offering up a tasty and naturally sweetened snack grown by sustainable, organic farms in South America.

Have a great weekend!

I was not compensated for this post but I did receive Barnana samples for review purposes. All opinions are my own.

Globetrotting Mommy: Top 10 …

April 2, 2014 By admin

What’s the first thing an avid traveler thinks about after seeing the big positive sign on the home pregnancy test?  You guessed it. Where in the world should we babymoon?  The last travel fling before the baby arrives, known as babymoons are growing in popularity as more and more couples take advantage of their last moments of solitude to connect with each other on a pampering getaway.

Babymoon, Babymoon Tips, Globetrotting Mommy, Top 10 Tips, Top 10 Babymoon Tips

Globetrotting Mommy: Top 10 tips for an Unforgettable Babymoon

Here are my top 10 tips for an unforgettable babymoon:

1) Timing is crucial and you’ll definitely want to travel during the second trimester when your energy levels are higher and you’re not too encumbered by a growing belly.

2) Spend time choosing a location that works for your budget and physical restrictions.  You probably won’t want to travel more than five hours and if you can fly direct, you’ll be a lot happier.  If you’re carrying multiples or high-risk, you’ll probably want to stay closer to home. Be sure to stay away from areas suffering health epidemics and be sure the water supply is clean.

3) Discuss all travel plans with your doctor and definitely listen to your body.  I originally had sights of cruising through Greece but my OB put the kibosh on that due to germs on a closed ship and food contamination fears.  Also check to see if you’ll need any immunizations and confirm that you’ll be near a hospital with quality medical care.

4) Stay hydrated but don’t drink carbonated beverages on the plane as they will make you more bloated.  Be sure to get up and walk around every hour and wear your seatbelt under your belly.

5) Don’t over plan with an ambitious itinerary — you may actually want to choose a location with few sights and attractions so you won’t be tempted to overexert yourself.  If you need to nap or go to bed at 7:30 pm, nobody will mind.

6) If you can, upgrade your accommodations and splurge on meals and spa treatments.  Now is definitely the time to pamper yourselves and pre-natal massages are really a necessity.

7) Take out comprehensive travel insurance that covers cancellation and emergency transport if needed.  Bring copies of your OB records, prescriptions and any special conditions you might have.

8) Bring super comfortable shoes and clothes.  You’ll probably be doing more walking than you do at home so you’ll want to be comfortable.  Think loose flowy sundresses and sarongs if you’re going on a babymoon someplace warm.

9) Squeeze in a little exercise with activities like a walk on the beach or a stroll around town.  Take advantage of pre-natal yoga classes and other low key offerings.

10) You may feel gigantic but don’t be shy about taking lots of pictures especially if you’re visiting a scenic location. And most importantly, relax and have fun!

Family Travel 101: Top 10 …

March 26, 2014 By admin

Traveling alone is simple.  Traveling with kids is a production!  Here are my Top 10 Packing Tips for Traveling with Kids.  Here’s hoping they make your trip go a little bit smoother…

Family travel, Top 10, Packing Tips, Traveling with Kids, Travel, Family Travel

Family Travel 101: Top 10 Packing Tips for Traveling with Kids

1) Put everything essential in your carry-on bag.  Basically, NEVER EVER put jewelry, electronics, and chargers, loveys, or medicine in your checked luggage.  Also, if something is vital to your kid’s happiness and you can’t buy it at your travel destination, leave it home or pack it in your carry-on.  I’m talking must-have toothbrush, special headband, favorite stuffed animal, etc.

2) Dress everyone in comfy outfits and bring a change of clothes for everyone in your carry-on bag.  If your kids are close in age you can probably get by with an extra top and leggings but no matter what, bring extra undies and diapers/burp cloths.  Air sickness, spills, and other accidents are bound to happen and you’ll be super sorry if you have to walk around smelling like puke or pee.

3) Oversized plastic bags and Ziplocs are your best friend.  Pack pajamas in one air compression bag and socks/undies/diapers in another and squeeze till flat.  Depending on where we’re going, I usually use Ziplocs for my daughter’s individual outfits or like items (bathing suits, tops, bottoms, etc.).  For going home, you can use these bags to keep the dirty laundry away from the clean things.

4) Charge all phones and electronic devices before you get to the airport and bring extra batteries and backup power chargers for the plane.  Always pack chargers in your carry-on bag.

5) Keep toiletries to a minimum unless someone in your family has allergy issues.  Make use of the hotel bath amenities but do remember your favorite toothpastes and must-have essentials like detangling spray and sunscreen.  If you’re not checking luggage, check out 3FLOZ and All Travel Sizes for travel sized products, travel kits and squeezable travel tubes.

6) Bring any and all medicine you might need especially if you are traveling out of the country.  If your kids are in the middle of a prescription, take the entire dose with you in case your flight home gets canceled. If you’re traveling with little kids, always pack a thermometer, first aid kit and children’s fever reducer.

7) If kids are old enough, let them be in charge of packing their carry-on bag.  Make sure they bring toys, arts and crafts, snacks, electronics, headphones and anything else that will keep them happily entertained.  My four-year old loves to take her Trunki – Trixie Pink as a carry on because it doubles as a ride-on toy (shown above).

8) Bring along a LOT of healthy snacks and your child’s favorite water bottle.  Easy to pack snacks include nuts, cheese sticks, raisin boxes, granola bars, sliced fruit, sandwiches, pretzels for older kids and squeeze fruit pouches, baby food, yogurt bites and puffs for smaller kids. I’ve never been stopped from bringing a water bottle for my daughter through airport security but they do ask to test it.  Don’t forget bottles and extra formula and bibs for the babes if needed.

9) Bring along family friendly games.  Small travel-friendly games like Melissa & Doug Travel Memory Game, magic pen/books and coloring books/crayons and cards are good non-electronic options.  I always pack a surprise toy or two in my suitcase like Legos, Play Doh or bead necklace kits to keep my daughter busy in the hotel. If you’re going somewhere beachy, bring along beach toys which can double as bath toys.

10) Pack a list of all important information in case you lose your phone or wallet.  Make a xerox for a family member not traveling with you along with a copy of your itinerary/car/hotel details.  The list should include passport information (if traveling abroad), drivers license details, credit card information, important phone numbers and email addresses and any medical records you might need during your trip.

Bon voyage!

Cool Apps Tuesday: Get around …

March 18, 2014 By admin

Looking for a cool app to help you find places and information when you’re home or away?  You’ll love AroundMe, a cool app that helps you find the closest restaurant, movie theatre, bank, and more by just using your fingertips.

Cool App Tuesday: Get around town with the Around Me App

Categories include Banks/ATM, Bars, Coffee Shops, Deals, Gas Stations, Hospitals, Hotels, Local Guides, Movie Theaters, Movies, Nearby, Parking, Pharmacies, Pubs, Restaurants, Supermarkets, Taxis, and Theaters.  There is also a favorites category where you can store your most used hotspots.

This app is super fast and when you click on a category, you get an array of listings and details.  For example, when you select movies, it lists movies and theaters where that selection is playing.  If you click on a movie title, it takes you to a synapsis page where you can read movie reviews, watch trailers, see showtimes and buy tickets.  Its similar for the hotel and restaurant tabs as well.

Getting lost is a thing of the past because it integrates with Google Maps and Foursquare and shows you exactly how to find the place you’ve selected. Make dinner reservations, book a hotel, buy theater tickets, get gas and find a pharmacy all in a few easy swipes.

AroundMe is one of the best free apps I’ve tried on my iPhone for local searches.  This is true lifesaver when you’re traveling to an unfamiliar town or even at home.  Give it a shot at home and see what you think. And if you hate the adds you can pay the $2.99 for the ad-free version.
