Cool for School – …

August 25, 2017 By admin

September is almost here and back-to-school mania is in full swing. If you’re shopping for the elementary school set, check out my Cool for Back-to-School must haves for September and beyond.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL MUST HAVES – STUDENT NECESSITIES:

Cool for School - Back-to-School Must Haves for September and beyond

Cool for School – Back-to-School Must Haves for September and beyond. A sturdy backpack is a must.

Backpacks:
One of the most essential back-to-school items is a backpack so be sure to help your kids choose one that will be a good fit. I specifically look for a roomy interior, adjustable shoulder straps (plus for chest-straps), dual zippers, exterior compartments and side pouches for water bottles. My daughter uses a backpack when we travel so styles that wear well are a plus.
For third grade, my daughter chose this fun World of Disney Emoji backpack because her favorite vacation destination is Disney World (surprise, surprise). Some other backpack picks I like this year include JanSport Superbreak Backpack in Prism Pink Sparkle, J. Crew’s Glow-in-The-Dark Snaggletooth Monster Backpack, and Pottery Barn’s Mackenzie Navy Solar System Backpack. Don’t forget to grab some fun backpack charms like Whiffer Sniffer’s awesome scented foodie clips.

Cool for School - Back-to-School Must Haves for September and beyond. Lunchtime won't be boring with these colorful lunch boxes.

Lunch boxes:
We’ve got a collection of lunch boxes and my favorites are the ones that don’t leak and clean up easily (think spilled yogurt). This year we’ll have these four on rotation. The coordinating World of Disney Emoji Lunch Tote, All Change London Tube Stations Bag we got in London, a rugged Bentology Kitty Lunch Tote which includes a bento box and a cute Bixbee Owl lunch box.

Cool for School - Back-to-School Must Haves: Cool School Supplies

Supplies:

Depending on the ages of your kids, you’ll need to stock up on pens, pencils, markers, desk supplies and other fun items. My daughter’s teacher sends a wish list for class items but I love to have some fun supplies at home. This year, I choose some fun pencils from FlyingTiger, Crayola Silly Scents washable markers, indestructible Mabel’s Labels Back to School Combos with emoji designs, and a Bright Pink Poppin Stapler.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL MUST HAVES – FASHION AND ACCESSORIES:

Shopping for Back-to-School fashions is either fun or torturous depending on your child’s preferences. I choose to do a lot of my daughter’s shopping online so I can easily return items she doesn’t like.
This year’s styles are full of bright colors, shiny sequins and lots of emojis sure to please every girl in class. For sneakers, my daughter chose these bright emoji Stride Rite Phibians which are light weight and double as a water shoe making them great for travel. Customized denim is all the rage and my daughter had a great time decorating a vest with colorful sequin patches. So cute, right? My daughter hates when other kids have the same things so one-of-a-kind upcycled dresses from Courtney Courtney and hand crafted tanks, t’s and hoodies from Playdate NYC are great options for kids like her. And, don’t forget to stock up on accessories like kitty-cat headbands and giant “Jo Jo” hair bows.

Extra credit items for back-to-school season.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL MUST HAVES – FOR EXTRA CREDIT:

A good night’s sleep is a must for students (and parents) so snag new pillows like the Snuggle-Pedic Ultra-Luxury Kool-Flow® bamboo shredded memory foam pillow that can be customized for the perfect fit. I can’t talk about school without mentioning lice prevention so now is the time to stock up on these yummy scented Rosemary Repel products from Fairy Tales Hair Care. If you are having trouble getting young kids to listen (or do homework, or get to school on time, etc.) get rid of the sticker reward chart and try the new Kudo Banz which rewards kids with bracelet charms they can proudly wear. And last but not least, another awesome item to buy now is Hero Clean Odor Eliminator because even tiny shoes get stinky.

What’s your favorite back-to-school item? Tell me below in the comments.

Parenting 101: Managing Kids …

August 9, 2017 By admin

Move over bedtimes, potty training, and breast feeding, one of the most controversial parenting topics is proving to be the most worrisome of all – managing kids and screen time.

Parenting 101: Managing Kids and Screen time at Home and Away

Parenting 101: Managing Kids and Screen time at Home and Away

Like most couples, my husband and I don’t exactly see eye-to-eye on this topic so navigating our daughter’s screen time is far from easy. While I would much prefer her to be playing with her toys or friends instead of staring at a screen (which is clearly addictive), there is definitely a time and place for electronics. Here’s how it typically works in our house…

Kids and Screen Time – During the school year:

We enforce a no screen time rule before school and after school while she completes her homework and chores. Depending on her day, I’ll let her watch up to an hour of television and play on my iPhone for a little while to get her Instagram fix. I find that the television is easy enough to turn off but taking the iPhone away is another story. On weekends, the rules relax and she begs for as much screen time as possible. I’m happy to sleep in while she and my husband enjoy their screen time but I do find her behavior to be less than optimal after too much screen time.

Kids and Screen Time – During the Summer and Vacations:

I’ll admit that the summer is a bit of a free-for-all. If she reads a book, I will reward her with tablet or TV time if we aren’t going anywhere. When we travel, the rules go out the window and she can have as much screen time on the plane or drive as she wants. She gets car sick so she tends not to over do it on car rides but on the plane, she will watch TV (thanks Jet Blue!) and play with her tablets for hours on end. And now that some hotels put TVs in bathrooms, my daughter’s negotiation skills are sharper than ever. I enjoy the break during our travels but again, I notice that her behavior deteriorates and her crankiness increases with too much screen time.

For me, dealing with the “aftermath” of screen time isn’t worth the “free time” so I tend to discourage it and this is probably why we enjoy running around the city so much. I also find that when I take the time to sit and play a game with her or let pretend to be the teacher or doctor while I play student or patient, she is thrilled.

If you’re trying to navigate your child’s emotional and physical well being, I highly recommend checking out the new Genius of Play video campaign. These videos feature parents discussing some of the most controversial topics surrounding play – including recess, whether or not kids should play unsupervised and of course how much screen time is too much…

Here’s what some parents are saying on these topics:

At the end of the day, everything in moderation seems to be the best way to go but I will always encourage my daughter to play outside and on play dates whenever I can.

How much screen time do your kids get at home and on vacation?  Tell me below in the comments.

The Best Rides at Splish …

June 19, 2017 By admin

We’ve started a family tradition of kicking off summer with a visit to Splish Splash Waterpark and this year was no different. After a crazy cold spring, we finally had the chance to visit last weekend and today I’m sharing the scoop on the Best Rides at Splish Splash for every age. Splish Splash is located in Riverhead, Long Island, about 90-minutes from Manhattan making it a great day trip to escape the city heat.

Best Rides at Splish Splash, Long Island.

Best Rides at Splish Splash, Long Island.

From babies to grandparents, everyone will find a favorite attraction at Splish Splash Waterpark. Splish Splash is a great option for a multi-generational visit since the rides are fairly close to each other, there is plenty of shade and seats plus attractions even a grandma who wants to keep her hair dry can enjoy. Read on for the best rides at Splish Splash for everyone in your family.

The Octopus Pool at Splish Splash is perfect for babies at toddlers.

BEST SPOTS FOR BABIES AND TODDLERS

The Kiddie Cove section is where you’ll be spending most of your time if you’ve got tiny kids. The Octopus Pool has the cutest baby swings, sprinkler fountains and super shallow wading pool. Across the way are three kiddie water slides that are pretty slow and end in a shallow pool so they are perfect for toddlers and little kids. There are plenty of lounge chairs and shaded areas so parents can set up camp or rent a nearby cabana.

BEST FOR LITTLE KIDS (3-8 and under 54″)

For children, the Pirate’s Cove shipwreck area and Yellow Submarine area feature small climbing and sliding structures in shallow pools. The Monsoon Lagoon is a larger play area that features a faster waterslide, canons and climbing ropes area. Little kids will also love the Kahuna Bay Wave Pool and the Lazy River. For rides, Dinosaur Falls and Mammoth River are the tamest raft rides and Bootleggers Run is a great family roller coaster ride for kids 42″ and up.

BEST RIDES AT SPLISH SPLASH FOR BIG KIDS (8-12)

Big kids have their pick of rides at Splish Splash since most rides have a 42″or 48″ height requirement to ride solo. Bootleggers Run is a favorite for this age as well as Hollywood Stunt Rider and Dragon’s Den tube rides, and the Giant Twister and Max Trax body slides. For kids who love dark rides, the Abyss tube slide and Barrier Reef body slide are great options.

Best Splish Splash Rides for teens and adults: Dr. Von Dark's Tunnel of Terror

BEST RIDES AT SPLISH SPLASH FOR TEENS AND ADULTS

Cliff Diver sends riders down an 8-story slide making it a great choice for adventure seekers. If dark and twisty rides are your thing, Dr. Von Dark’s Tunnel of Terror will be a favorite. One of my favorite rides to watch is Shotgun Falls where riders plunge into a 10-foot pool so I would recommend this one only for strong swimmers.

Mammoth River is a great choice for the whole family.

FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

The Battle of Mutiny Bay is a slow interactive water ride where you can shoot water from the ship or from water cannons on land. Other picks are the lazy river, Kahuna Bay Wavepool (the whistle means the waves are coming), Soak City pool area and Mammoth River (you will get wet on this one). In addition to rides, families can enjoy a Tropical Parrot Show from June 17 – September 4 at 12:30, 1:30, 3:30 and 5:30.

Gulliver’s Gate NYC: a …

June 9, 2017 By admin

The latest NYC tourist attraction has arrived and it is definitely worth checking out with or without the kids.  Gulliver’s Gate is a “mini-world” exhibit in Times Square where families can wander from city to city, exploring the whole wide world in one trip. We checked it out at the grand opening party and I especially loved looking at all the mini NYC sights and landmarks. Just look at all the tiny details in this amazing downtown scene…

Such amazing details in the mini downtown NYC at Gulliver's Gate.

Such amazing details in the mini downtown NYC at Gulliver’s Gate.

We explored the hundreds of built-to-scale scenes from Europe, Asia, Latin America, Russia, New England, the Middle East and Washington DC, as well many other regions around the globe. My daughter especially enjoyed Gulliver’s Gate’s interactive aspects, including moving model trains and cars, as well as ships that sail, bridges that open and close, characters that move about and balloons that float through the air. Kids are given special keys to unlock some of the moving parts and this really helps to keep them focused on each exhibit.

Since we were just in London, my daughter loved naming all the London landmarks and watching the tiny queen come in and out of Buckingham Palace.  Can you spot her below?

There are so many famous landmarks like the Pyramids, the Colosseum, the Louvre, the Panama Canal, Big Ben, and more as well as scenes of locals all over the world. From playgrounds and concert halls to airports and subway stations, you can easily spend hours exploring around.

I personally loved the crazy attention to detail in all the exhibits as well as the cheeky adult finds like the Beatles crossing Abbey Road in London and the Obamas waving from the White House.

If you’re looking for a fun keepsake, there is a full-body scanner and 3-D printer that allows visitors to make miniature versions of themselves to take home or you can opt to have your mini model live as a “model citizen” of Gulliver’s Gate. Tres cool.

What an awesome way to show kids the world’s landmarks and teach a little geography along the way. Visiting information and pricing can be found here.

Where to Go for Medical …

May 24, 2017 By admin

Medical emergencies at home can be scary but things can seem much worse when you’re on the go. Most new moms have first-aid kits in their strollers and thermometers at home but it isn’t so easy to know where to turn when you’re faced with more than a scraped knee or low-grade fever, especially on a weekend or during a vacation.

Where to Go for Medical Emergencies at Home and Away

Where to Go for Medical Emergencies at Home and Away

For the easy stuff, a call or visit to a pediatrician is enough but for more severe medical emergencies, urgent care centers and emergency room visits are unavoidable when you’re dealing with kids. Do you and your caregivers know when to visit an urgent care center or head to the ER for a medical emergency?

Lucky for you, today I’m sharing some pointers I picked up from Neal Shipley, Regional Medical Director, Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care. GoHealth Urgent Care operates urgent care centers in the New York, Portland/Vancouver metropolitan areas, the San Francisco Bay Area and now Hartford, Connecticut.

MEDICAL EMERGENCIES: HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOM VISITS

Hospital Emergency Room (or Emergency Department) visits are scary, expensive and time-consuming but when you gotta go, you gotta go. If the situation is life-threatening – such as severe bleeding, head trauma, seizures, meningitis, breathing difficulties, dehydration, and serious bacterial infections – head directly to an Emergency Room or call an ambulance.

TOP REASONS TO CALL AN AMBULANCE OR GO RIGHT TO THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT:

  • If your child has difficulty breathing or shortness of breath or is turning blue or where the child is wheezing too much to count to ten (or a baby is wheezing too much to drink or nurse)
  • Is having a seizure
  • Your baby is less than 3 months old and has a fever higher than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius)
  • Has had a change in mental status, such as suddenly becoming unusually sleepy or difficult to wake, disoriented, or confused
  • If your child has a stiff neck along with a fever and a rash
  • A large cut to the head, chest, or abdomen or where bleeding won’t stop after 5 minutes of direct pressure or especially in younger children who need sedation or behavioral support while the laceration is being repaired
  • Has an electric shock from an outlet or a chewed wire
  • Significant burns, as judged any blister greater than the size of the child’s palm. Any burn with smoke, gas or heated air inhalation needs the ER
  • A child accidentally ingests a poisonous substance or too much medication or a button battery or a magnet; if your teenager seems to be taking illegal drugs and is acutely intoxicated
  • Has had head trauma and was unconscious or is acting confused
  • Severe abdominal pain with fever and is vomiting over and over again
  • Call 911 for an ambulance in severe situations when you need the help of trained medical personnel on the way to the hospital. For example, your child has been in a car accident, has a head or neck injury, has ingested too much medication and is now hard to rouse, or is not breathing or is turning blue. In these cases, dial 911 for an ambulance.

MEDICAL EMERGENCIES: URGENT CARE VISITS

An urgent care center can be a good option for non-emergencies at night, on weekends and when you area away from home. At these centers, you can typically get X-rays, stitches, and care for minor injuries that aren’t life threatening yet require medical attention on the same day.

TOP REASONS TO GO TO URGENT CARE

  • Upper Respiratory Infections:  Viral upper respiratory infections (involving the throat, nose or trachea)
  • Fever:  Fevers are one of the most common reasons for pediatric urgent care
  • Ear Pain:  Not all cases of ear pain turn out to be an ear infection, so a doctor’s evaluation can help decide if antibiotics are needed
  • Superficial Injuries:  Wound care and prompt treatment can prevent complications like infections or scarring
  • Sprains and Strains:  These become more and more common as kids get older and more active. Sprains are more serious than strains, and they indicate a potential injury to a ligament

Hopefully, you’ll never deal with any of these situations but it is always good to be in the know. Also, remember to take your insurance cards, medications, prescriptions and immunization records along when you travel. In addition, bring contact details for your children’s doctors and specialists.

Lastly, if you’re in the metro NYC area, Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care in Manhattan and Brooklyn are offering walk-in camp physicals for just $50.

2016 Holiday Gift Guide …

December 13, 2016 By admin

The holiday season is here so don’t wait until the last minute to get your mom (or wife) a great present.  Of course, the best gifts are handmade so have your kiddo make a card or necklace to go along with one of these picks from my 2016 Holiday Gift Guide – Gifts for Moms who Travel.

Got a new mom who loves to travel and cook on your holiday list? She may not be able to travel around the world right now but she can give her baby a taste of exotic worldwide flavors with Around the World in 80 Purees: Easy Recipes for Global Baby Food. It is so interesting to see what other countries choose as first foods for their babies and learn about spices from all over the world, I’m sure any new mom would love this. Pair this with a BEABA babycook and she’ll be whipping up culinary masterpieces in no time.

Every globetrotting mom on your list will love ARMigami, the wrap that does it all. The soft fabric drapes without clinging and can be worn in dozens of styles from skirts and halters to wraps and beach cover-ups as you simply style it by folding, twisting and buttoning! I received one at the Momtrends holiday event (in black of course) and I have worn it as a scarf, halter wrap and shrug top so far. The wraps are available in a selection of colors and fabrics and they all come inside a matching travel bag making them a great gift for any traveling mom.

I usually throw my regular cosmetics in a ziploc when I travel so when Stowaway Cosmetics told me about their travel-sized makeup line, I was all ears. Their seven-piece essentials kit comes with a travel pouch making it a perfect gift for any on-the-go mom. The petite cosmetics are “right sized” which means you won’t get bored with shades or have to worry about expiration dates. I love how simple the items are to use (no need for extra brushes or sponges) and how easy the eyeshadow palate is to apply. I am usually running out the door in the mornings but when I gave myself a few minutes to sample these items, my mom friends all commented how great my make-up looked.

Every mom I know who loves to travel also loves to take photos. If you’re looking for some photography inspired gift ideas you can’t go wrong with this chic Gold Mine camera strap from Bloom Theory Straps?  I love the Stardust with silver sequins too. For underwater photos, my GoPro is hard to beat and a new DSLR or iPhone is always a great gift.

I don’t like to travel with high-maintenance jewelry which includes anything that needs to be polished. The new line of Nambé jewelry is a great gift for moms who want wear nice jewelry with ease because the sterling silver pieces are Rhodium plated for a tarnish resistant finish. Whether you wear these pieces every day or once in a blue moon, not having to polish is a major plus for busy moms. My favorites are the modern pieces like multi-band rings and twist cuff bracelets that won’t snag clothing or scratch babies.

6 Great NYC Shows for the …

December 6, 2016 By admin

New York City is one of the most magical places to spend the holidays. While most visitors are busy checking out the bedazzled store windows and ice skating under the big tree, one of my favorite family friendly activities is taking in a great show. This year, I’m sharing some of my favorite holiday picks for everyone on your list. Show tickets make great holiday gift ideas, especially for those people who have it all. Book soon and enjoy because many of these are in town for a limited holiday run…

6 Great NYC Shows for the Holiday Season, Broadway, off-broadway, globetrottingmommy

6 Great NYC Shows for the Holiday Season

These shows are all family friendly but I’ve categorized them by family members I think would especially enjoy each one.

6 Great NYC Shows for the Holiday Season - Waitress is the perfect feel good Broadway musical for the holiday season.

6 Great NYC Shows for the Holiday Season – Waitress is the perfect feel good Broadway musical for the holiday season.

BFF DATE: Waitress the Musical

Grab your besties and go see this Broadway love story that highlights relationships, friendships and baking. The acting, singing, and choreography are all fabulous and the characters truly come alive on stage. You’ll fall in love with the storyline and show’s heroine as you watch the show’s twists and turns. Best of all, little mini pies are sold at intermission. What more do you need for a night out with the girls?

6 Great NYC Shows for the Holiday Season - That Golden Girls Show! off broadway, globetrotting mommy

6 Great NYC Shows for the Holiday Season – That Golden Girls Show!

SISTER DATE: That Golden Girls Show

If you grew up in the 80’s, That Golden Girls Show will not disappoint. This is the perfect outing to take your sister (aunt, mom or grandma) or invite the whole family. I was wondering if it would be distracting to see a puppet show with the puppeteers on stage but turns out, their unique personalities just added to the adorableness of the show. You’ll laugh at the old jokes and antiquated references and will leave humming the “Thank You For Being a Friend” theme song. This off-broadway show is in the lively Union Square neighborhood so you can check out the famed gift market or farmer’s market before or after. Playing now through December 31, 2016.

6 Great NYC Shows for the Holiday Season - Fiddler on the Roof, Broadway, Musical, globetrottingmommy

6 Great NYC Shows for the Holiday Season – Fiddler on the Roof

MOM DATE: Fiddler on the Roof

My mom and I have a tradition of seeing a new Broadway classic every year and this year we saw the newest incarnation of Fiddler on the Roof. The themes in Fiddler on the Roof are timeless, the dancing is AMAZING and the songs will keep you humming for weeks. The show is closing on December 31, 2016 so if you haven’t seen it yet, the holiday season is the perfect chance.

6 Great NYC Shows for the Holiday Season - The Illusionists, Turn of The Century.

6 Great NYC Shows for the Holiday Season – The Illusionists – Turn of The Century.

HUSBAND DATE: The Illusionists – Turn of the Century

If your husband doesn’t like Broadway musicals (I know, I know), The Illusionists is the perfect Broadway theater date night for the holidays. My husband and I were absolutely amazed by the optical illusions and magical performances that took place in The Palace Theater, the same theater where Harry Houdini once performed. From beds of nails, knife throwing, and card tricks to comedy acts and classic performances (yes they cut a woman in half!), every act was better than the next.  Be sure to have some unique things in your purse in case you get called on stage by The Clairvoyants. This is a great family show for ages 6 and up. Now through January 1, 2017.

6 Great NYC Shows for the Holiday Season - Peter and The Wolf at The Guggenheim Museum.

6 Great NYC Shows for the Holiday Season – Peter and The Wolf at The Guggenheim Museum.

COUSINS DATE: Peter and the Wolf at the Guggenheim Museum

I’ve gone to sooooo many kids shows since becoming a mom and some are enjoyable for parents too and some aren’t. Lucky for me, Seeing Peter and The Wolf narrated by Isaac Mizrachi at The Guggenheim Museum was great fun for all. Mizrachi steals the show with his humorous storytelling and each character has their own instrumental pairing so the music really helps kids follow along. This show is a perfect choice to see with cousins and then you can explore the museum afterward. There are three remaining shows on December 9, 10 and 11, 2016.

6 Great NYC Shows for the Holiday Season - Pips Island

6 Great NYC Shows for the Holiday Season – Pip’s Island

KIDDIE PLAY DATE: Pip’s Island

I took my daughter and her pal on an after school adventure to Pip’s Island and they gave it a 9 and a 10! I still can’t explain this interactive show but think Willy Wonka meets a magical tree house with snow, bubbles, fog and mystical characters minus the candy. Parents go along too so be warned there is a crazy fast slide and no photos allowed. It’s perfect for kids 5-10 and near Chelsea piers, the High Line and art galleries making it a great weekend adventure. Check it out now through January 8, 2017.
