June 11, 2015 By admin

Today I’m sharing some big Skylanders news sure to please young and old globetrotters…Skylanders SuperChargers is coming this fall and kids (and adults) will soon be able to explore and navigate the mountainous terrains, deep sea environments and big blue skies of Skylands with the vehicles-to-life feature.

The new game features 20 vehicle designs and types (think race cars, motorcycles, boats, tanks, helicopters, jets, submarines and more) many of which feature moving parts. These new vehicles pair with twenty new SuperChargers – special Sklylanders who can interact with vehicle tricks, new moves and weapons. Of course, any Skylanders characters can drive the new vehicles allowing for endless imaginative play.

I got a sneak peek thanks to Momtrends and the graphics, new characters and vehicles looked great.  Check them out…

In addition, many hotels offer gaming consoles in their kids clubs or available to borrow so if you’re planning a vacation with your Skylanders’ fans, be sure to ask before you go.

Traveling with Tots: Customize …

April 23, 2015 By admin

Have you ever seen a fashionable baby car seat?  They didn’t exist when my daughter was born five years ago but they do now… If you’re looking for a stylish and safe car seat that can be customized to match your car’s interior or your outfits, check out Maxi-Cosi’s Mico Max 30.

Traveling with Tots: Customize Your Car Seat With Maxi-Cosi

I went to the Maxi-Cosi Custom Program launch party last week where stylish (and pregnant) Bobbie Thomas showed us how easy it is to mix and match fabrics and frames to customize these new car seats. With more than 250 potential combinations, parents can channel their inner designers as they see their creations come alive via the Maxi-Cosi website.

Here’s some eye candy I designed…

Traveling with Tots: Customize Your Car Seat With Maxi-Cosi

Like a year round summer feel?  Click on a White frame, Pink Berry seat cushion, Grey Gravel canopy and Mosaic Blue cozi set.  Want to blend right in with your car’s dark leather interior?   Click your way to a Black frame, Blue Base seat, Devoted Black canopy and Purple Pace cozi set. Custom seats are hand-assembled and delivered within three weeks, with free shipping offered for a limited time.

Aside from being stylish, the Mico Max 30, designed for rear-facing children from 4 to 30 pounds and up to 32 inches, provides superior safety for baby with Air Protect Side Impact Protection and an anti-rebound bar.  Self-wicking fabrics, and a washer/dryer-safe seat pad that snaps off without undoing harnesses, make this a great option for babies who get car sick.  Mico Max 30 is also the lightest premium car seat available, making it a great option for globetrotting families. Traveling by plane, pair it with the Maxi-Taxi folding base and you’re good to go.

Which combination is your favorite?

Traveling Toys: LeapPad3 …

March 3, 2015 By admin

We’re big LeapFrog fans so when we were asked to review the LeapPad3, I knew my daughter would be up for the challenge.

LeapPad3, Traveling Toys, Electronics, Tablets for kids, Kids, Toys for Kids, Toys for Travel

Traveling Toys: LeapPad3 Review

I occasionally let her use electronic gadgets at home but when we travel I let her use them as much as she wants on the plane or in the car. We had a 6+ hour road trip planned so I charged it up and surprised her with it as soon as she uttered, “Are we there yet?”.

She was immediately drawn to its child friendly size and cuteness (pretty in pink) and loved the attached stylus (brilliant!). With very little prompting, she was figuring out the various games, apps, videos and camera while learning how to control the stylus and touchscreen. She happily followed each game’s voice instructions and I happily had some uninterrupted time!  Win win.

LeapPad3, Traveling Toys, Electronics, Tablets for kids, Kids, Toys for Kids, Toys for Travel

Traveling Toys: LeapPad3 Review

As with other LeapFrog products, the games are fun AND educational. While she was playing she was also learning math, reading and other problem solving skills. My daughter is in Kindergarden and it seemed like she was able to play with every game at various levels. Best of all, the games automatically adjusted to her skill level so there was never any frustration.  It comes with 10 preloaded apps and hundreds more are available to download from the LeapFrog library featuring characters from Disney, Nick. Jr., Sesame Street and more. FYI, the games and apps can add up but if you have other LeapPad products your purchases can be shared by up to three devices.

She especially liked a Barbie game where you matched rhyming words, a puzzle game that involved a bit of geometry, the camera app and seeing her favorite shows like Paw Patrol. There was plenty to do without using Wi-Fi but older kids might enjoy playing with their friends online and chatting with other kids who have LeapPads.

I was really impressed with the LeapPad3’s rechargeable battery life (don’t forget to pack the charger) and overall sturdiness. My daughter loved playing with it and I loved that I didn’t have to worry about her venturing off into YouTube videos or deleting my files. The recommended age is 3-9 but I think 4-6 year olds will enjoy it the most. If you’ve got a long trip with little kids coming up, the LeapPad3 makes a great travel companion.

Fun Food Friday: Top 10 Kid …

October 31, 2014 By admin

Do your kids say “I’m hungry” all the time?  That’s an easy one when you’re home but when you’re on the go, you better be ready with some kid friendly snacks.

Here are some of my favorite go-to, mostly healthy snacks for traveling.

Kid friendly snacks, banana chips, chick peas, GoGo Squeeze, PackEms

Fun Food Friday: Top 10 Kid Friendly Snacks for Planes, Trains and Automobiles

1) Food that doesn’t make a mess is a win when you’re on the go.  I love squeezy fruit pouches like GoGo Squeez and yogurt tubes which I keep in my freezer.

2) String cheese.  If you’ve got little kids, these are probably already in your fridge.  A great snacks for parents too.

3) Yogurt covered raisins or pretzels.  The yogurt makes it healthy, right?

4) Rice cakes are great for kids of all ages.  Too healthy? Take along some single serving peanut butter pouches to spread on top and your kids won’t even notice whats underneath…

5) Bananas in any form.  Bananas seem to be a universal pleaser with kids.  If you’re not worried about squishing, take along some fresh ones.  If you need something more durable, try Barnana bites or my personal favorite, banana chips from Trader Joe’s.

6) Roasted seaweed snacks.  Maybe its a NYC thing, but the kids here all snack on seaweed.  It’s healthy, available in small packages and lightweight making it a great option for traveling.

7) Freeze dried fruit.  Its always nice if you can take along fresh fruit on your travels but when you can’t, freeze dried options (apples and berries for my daughter) are a great choice.

8) Trail mix, granola and energy bars come in all varieties these days making them a great option for a quick meal or snack. KIND and Luna bars are my faves but if you’re feeling inspired, there are a million DIY recipes on Pinterest.

9) Cereals like Cheerios and Puffins are great for traveling.  Just add milk or grab and go.  This one works for toddlers and teens alike.

10) Salty snacks are super popular in my house and pretzels seem to please in any shape or flavor. There are some great alternatives to greasy chips like Chick-a-peas baked chick pea snacks (a great gluten free snack option), wasabi peas which are great for older kids and popcorn in cheesy or sweet flavors.

Kid friendly snacks, Pack Ems, snack bags, eco friendly

Fun Food Friday: Top 10 Kid Friendly Snacks for Planes, Trains and Automobiles

I love when snacks are individually wrapped but sometimes its easier to portion out my own snacks.  If you’re looking for an eco-friendly snack storage option, I recently got to test out Pack’Ems and I think they’re a great option for on-the-go families.  The set includes small and large bags made of super durable plastic (BPA, PVA and phthalate-free of course) which is easy to clean by hand or in the dishwasher. The velcro closure is super easy for kids to open and close, but my favorite thing about them (especially for plane travel) is the way they stand when opened.  No more knocking over the bag of chips on your tray table ever again…

Have a great weekend!

Spotlight on NYC: Victorian …

August 21, 2014 By admin

One of my favorite spots to disappear in the summer is Central Park. The big boulders, lakes and miles of grass quickly make me forget I’m dead smack in the middle of an urban jungle. After I became a mom, I quickly found out that Central Park is also home to Victorian Gardens, a mini-amusement park (with stellar views!) that is just perfect for the mini-set.

NYC, Victorian Gardens, Amusement Park, Central Park, New York with Kids, Family Travel

Spotlight on NYC: Victorian Gardens Amusement Park in Central Park

Victorian Gardens is located at Wollman Rink which is an ice skating rink in the winter. Leave it to the Donald to turn any bit of real estate into a money making enterprise. There is a nice selection of children’s rides (bumper boats, swings, airplanes, roller coaster, train, etc.) and none are too scary so even the littlest kids will be entertained.

NYC, Victorian Gardens, Amusement Park, Central Park, New York with Kids, Family Travel

Spotlight on NYC: Victorian Gardens Amusement Park in Central Park

This was my daughter’s third summer visiting and she was especially excited to be tall enough (42 inches) for every single ride! The rides are just perfect for the 2-5 age range but younger kids will be fine riding with parents. Its a very manageable spot with little kids since the rides are all contained in a small area (think ice rink) and the lines are never too long. Pack a lunch and grab a picnic bench or buy food at the concessions stand when you get hungry.

NYC, Victorian Gardens, Amusement Park, Central Park, New York with Kids, Family Travel

Spotlight on NYC: Victorian Gardens Amusement Park in Central Park

It’s a little pricey for what it is (pay-as-you-go starting at $7 or unlimited wristband options starting at $21) but since you don’t have to drive hours to get there, I think its worth paying up. Kids under 36 inches are free so bring along the little siblings. After a couple of hours, you’ll be ready to go home but don’t say I didn’t warn you if your kids want to stay and climb the nearby boulders for another hour…

If you’ll be near Central Park, check it out before they close on September 7.

Travel postcards are a fun way to share your adventures near and far.  If you’re looking for a great way to get your kids away from their iPads and engaged in their vacation surroundings, check out this Watercolor Postcards kit from a portable studio.

Globetrotting Kids: Artsy Adventures in Postcards

I think kids would love designing their own postcards to send to their friends and family back home.  This would also be a fun activity to do on the plane ride home.  I know a few adults who would love this too so I think it would make a great gift for anyone artsy.

If you’re feeling crafty, you could easily DIY your own travel postcard kit or get some extra postcards and the whole family can share one kit.

Story time is a favorite for kids of all ages. If you’re looking for a fun gift for literary loving jet setters, look no further than these airplane bookends from Maple Landmark.  They’re made from locally sourced Vermont maple and pine and painted with non-toxic finishes.  The wheels, propellers and figures are fixed so these are completely baby-proof.
