Spotlight on Brooklyn: …

February 24, 2014 By admin

During one of the recent snowstorms (yes, way too many this year!) my daughter and I were invited to join the Appaman team at Park Slope’s Hiho Batik boutique.  It can be a pain to to trek around in the snow with kids but we’re always eager to explore new neighborhood finds, we love artsy opportunities and we’re big Appaman fans so off we went.

Brooklyn’s trendy Park Slope neighborhood is full of adorable boutiques, cafes and tree lined streets.  When you first enter Hiho Batik, you’ll find a wide range of adorable kids clothing, great gifts and toys in the front.  In the back, you’ll find a design center where you can design your own batik creation.

If you’re not familiar with the ancient art of batik, the process involves creating intricate designs using wax and dyes.  I’ve visited batik workshops in the Caribbean where I’ve bought some beautiful batik sarongs so I was super excited to try the process first hand.

We sat down with the design team who walked us through each step.  We started by choosing our creation (shirts or pillow) then we were given a piece of paper to draw our design in pencil at a large craft table.  There is a book with designs that you can trace or you can make your own creation. Once the design was perfect, my daughter and I traced over with a black marker and then headed over to the next station.

The next step was hot wax and that’s best left to older kids or grown ups.  With a special machine, you dispense the hot wax on top of the design outline moving quickly and smoothly.  Don’t worry, you practice on a t-shirt first to get the technique down. From there, its back to the craft table where you choose your selection of colored dyes to fill in the areas between the wax design.

After choosing your background color, the Hiho Batik team washes out the wax and finishes your impressive one-of-a-kind creation to be picked up later.  There is no entry fee and pricing is $45 which is great for a day’s activity and personalized creation.

Volia!  Here’s our pillow we made for grandma:

You can make an appointment to create your own batik masterpiece or just walk in.  Hiho Batik also offers children’s parties which would be great for kids 5 and up.  If you’re not coming to Brooklyn any time soon, you can create your design at home and the Hiho team will make it into a shirt, tote or pillow for you!

After making our creation my daughter enjoyed decorating Appaman monkey cookies (and eating) while I got the latest scoop on Appaman’s Spring 2014 collection (think comfy styles, cool graphics, hoodies, twirly skirts as well trendy dresses and cute suits for boys).

My daughter has become very particular about what she’ll wear (dresses, dresses, dresses, leggings, no jeans) and I’m always a little nervous when I buy her something new but sometimes I hit the jackpot with something we both love.  Case in point, her adorable gold Appaman winter coat she’s been wearing every single day!

If you’re getting bored of spending your snowy weekends home or in a museum, head over to Hiho Batik boutique and let your kids unleash their creativity in a cozy and fun setting.  There are some great brunch spots nearby including Lobo where we had a delicious tex-mex brunch (yummy huevos rancheros and great kids menu) after our morning craft session.

Note:  Thanks to Appaman and Hiho Batik for inviting us to create our pillow and providing us with a fabulous goody bag.  All opinions are my own.

Floating Summer Camp Option …

January 21, 2014 By admin

Here in New York, January means time to sign up for summer camp!  If you’re looking for a fun and adventurous camp experience for your globetrotting teens, you’ll want to check out Summer Camps aboard the Tall Ship Oliver Hazard Perry.

(Photo credits: 1) Sixteen-year-old Anna Spring aboard the Norwegian Tall Ship Sørlandet this past summer during the Tall Ships America’s TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Series in the Great Lakes (Photo Credit Tall Ships America/Angela Deluce). 2) Kids learn “the ropes” aboard a Tall Ship (Photo Credit Tall Ships America/Matt Maples).)

Teens can choose from seven weeks of adventures featuring itineraries throughout the North East (think MA, NH, RI and NY). Each session features 30-34 students and 15 professional crew members aboard the newly built SSV Oliver Hazard Perry.

Students will take the helm of the 500-ton Tall Ship, learn to work as a team with others as they hoist and brace the yards on the 130-foot tall rig, and apply acquired seamanship and navigation skills to guide the ship’s course on a voyage of discovery.  In addition, they will witness the natural magic of the ocean and its inhabitants—think spectacular night skies, marine phosphorescence, whales breaching and dolphins at play! Newport, Nantucket, Boston, Portsmouth and Greenport are among the historically rich ports the ship will visit.

Camp price for six days/nights is $1,600 with a 10% discount for booking by the end of January. Check out the entire schedule online.

If I was a teenager I’d be asking my mom for her credit card information right now…

Visit Philly this weekend and …

January 14, 2014 By admin

Looking for a fun weekend getaway?  Head to Philadelphia January 17-19  where you can celebrate Ben Franklin’s 308th birthday with festivities, giveaways and parties to honor America’s favorite Founding Father.

Family friendly highlights for the January 17-19 events include:

  • Visit Philadelphia™ is providing free admission for up to 1,250 visitors to the new Benjamin Franklin Museum all birthday weekend long. At the museum, history buffs can explore Franklin’s life and accomplishments through interactive activities, artifacts, video presentations and more.
  • A fountain of inspirational quotes, Franklin left a legacy of sayings that are repeated dozens of times each day. But which are people’s favorites? Visit Philadelphia™ will find out the answer to this question in daily Facebook polls that encourage fans to vote for a quote now through January 17.  Visit Philadelphia’s Facebook page will post two quotes daily and each Facebook follower who votes for their favorite will be entered to win a Franklin-themed getaway prize package, including hotel accommodations, admission to various Franklin-themed attractions, gift certificates for Franklin-inspired meals and more.
  • On January 17, visitors can get their photo taken with a life-size statute of Ben in the National Constitution Center‘s Signers’ Hall, sign his birthday card and then enjoy some birthday cake. In honor of Franklin’s 308th birthday, guests also enjoy $3.08 off general admission tickets.
  • More than three centuries after his birth, Franklin remains ageless in his many portraits. Ben buffs can join a National Park Service ranger for the Happy Birthday Benjamin Franklin program in the Portrait Gallery at the Second Bank of the United States. It highlights photos of Franklin and his contemporaries and touches on how their contributions continue to impact the world today.
  • At the Historic Philadelphia Center, revelers can meet Ben in person, listen to stories about the famed American and partake in other family-friendly activities during Ben Franklin’s Birthday Celebration. Free birthday cake at 1:00 p.m. on January 17.

Philadelphia is one of my favorite cities on the East Coast.  Visit Greater Philadelphia’s official visitor website for more details and to play your getaway.

Are we there yet? A new iPad …

November 27, 2013 By admin

If you’re heading out of town for Thanksgiving, you’ll want to download the Map the World iPad app before you go.  It’s free, its fun, its educational and it”s a great app for traveling since it will keep the whole family entertained.

Globetrotting Mommy - Travelzoo's Map the World iPad app review

Globetrotting Mommy – Travelzoo’s Map the World iPad app review

This new iPad app, launched as part of Travelzoo‘s 15th birthday celebration, offers up nine puzzles for kids and adults to hone their geography knowledge.  You simply drag the colorful puzzle pieces into the matching spot while recordings of the place’s names help you learn how to pronounce them.

Globetrotting Mommy - Map the World iPad App

Globetrotting Mommy – Map the World iPad App

I did a few puzzles and they were quite challenging (I’m talking to you Oceans and Seas).  I really thought it would be too hard for my 4-year old but when I set her up with the United States puzzle, I was pleasantly surprised to see her finish it (in 10 minutes but still…).  If you’re traveling with grandparents, I think this would be an easy app to get them working on their techie skills since its pretty self explanatory and they’ll enjoy the congratulatory prompts along the way.

The new iPad game also introduces players to one of the world’s poorest countries, Malawi.  Through a giving-back program, Travelzoo is encouraging parents to donate $1 or more to Open Arms Malawi, a charitable organization that provides medical attention, shelter, education, food and love to some of Malawi’s 1,000,000 orphaned and abandoned children.  A nice touch to go along with giving thanks this season.

What’s your favorite app for traveling?

Road trip: The Crayola …

November 13, 2013 By admin

My daughter is very artsy so when I heard that the Crayola Experience (formerly the Crayola Factory) had been expanded and renovated, I knew we had to check it out.  Located about 90 minutes from New York City, its a great spot for a day trip or a weekend getaway. We stopped by on the way to visit family in Northern PA so it was a nice way to break up our trip.

Globetrotting Mommy - Crayola Experience

Globetrotting Mommy – Crayola Experience

We arrived shortly after opening so the crowds weren’t too bad. I definitely recommend arriving early if possible.  The Crayola Experience features four floors of activities for kids of all ages (no lie, we’re talking toddlers to teens) making it a great family destination. Crayons steal the show (fresh crayon smells waft throughout the exhibits) but you will also find activities that involve markers, wax, modeling clay and other artistic mediums.

Admission includes three tokens which can be used at Wrap it Up (custom crayons anyone?), Marker Mania and Modeling Madness. Additional tokens are $.50 each and you will definitely need more if your kids are anything like my daughter.  Start at the theater which features a 20-minute interactive show (part human and part animation) detailing how crayons are made. As you exit, you receive a newly born crayon. Throw it in your welcome bag and start your adventure.  Our first stop after the show was Wrap it Up.  We had a lot of fun making custom crayons as souvenirs for our friends and family.

Globetrotting Mommy - Crayola Experience

Globetrotting Mommy – Crayola Experience

From there we wandered up each floor and explored the activities.  Basically, my daughter quickly ran from one activity to the next while we chased her around holding the map and snapping photos.  You know how that goes.  The favorites were Melt Down (painting with various colors of melted crayons), Art Alive (an animation area where your artwork appears on the wall), Be a Star exhibit (smile and your picture turns into a coloring page, T-shirt, puzzle, etc.), Doodle in the Dark (you move on the mat and the coordinating crayon dances on the screen), Puzzle It (turn your drawings into puzzles), Paint Palette (a crafting area) and Drip Art (a very cool crayon version of spin art).  There were a handful of activities that were available for an extra charge which I found a bit annoying but they were mostly on the outskirts so that was nice.  Be prepared to say yes or you might face a non-crayon type of melt down…

While we didn’t explore every single area (way too crowded play area, water works area seemed out of place, etc.) we still managed to spend about four hours and had a great time.  Be sure not to miss the memorabilia throughout the museum like the old school photos of vintage crayon boxes and their featured colors. Exit through the gift shop (of course) but this one actually features a nice array of gifts and souvenirs (including design your own packs of crayons and markers).

Things to know:

Admission to the Crayola Experience is $16.99 per person when you buy tickets in advance online. Kids under two are free. Annual passes are just $34.99 and are worth the price if you plan to visit two or more times in a year.

There is a cafe on the first floor or if you’re feeling adventurous, visit one of the downtown Easton restaurants within walking distance.  Be sure to check out the directions and parking information before you go and let me know what you think.

Bon voyage.
