Picture Perfect Personalized …

April 14, 2014 By admin

Personalized baby quilts make awesome baby gifts and I’m loving these handmade map quilts by artist Emily Fischer.  They’re available in a choice of 11 US cities as well as Paris and you can have up to three locations (birth hospital, home, favorite park, landmarks, etc.) hand embroidered on the map as well as the baby’s name and birthday.

Picture Perfect Personalized Baby Quilts for Globetrotting Babes

The hand-knotted quilts are made of natural cotton and 100%cotton batting.  Cotton loops are stitched to the binding so it can double as a wall hanging when the child is older.

I think these would be a very special keepsake for a baby’s nursery and an amazing baby shower gift (they can send a gift card and parents can have the personalization done once the child is born).

Globetrotting Spring Fashion …

March 31, 2014 By admin

I love finding unique fashion accessories for my daughter and when they’re inspired by different cultures and affordable, that’s even better.  When I spotted the colorful Peppercorn Kids booth at the recent ENK Children’s Club, I had to take a peek.

Globetrotting Spring Fashion Accessories: Boho Chic meets California Girl at Peppercorn Kids

The girls accessories were so cute and on trend with a fun mix of colorful beaded rope bracelets, beaded cloth covered necklaces and globally inspired headbands, scarfs and head wraps.  I especially loved the adorable hand painted Babushka baby doll necklace on an adjustable suede cord.  How cute does miss G look wearing it?

Little girls will adore the cute patchwork animal purses and backpack charms and glittery belts.

If you’re looking for some unique children’s accessories that won’t break the bank, Peppercorn Kids will not disappoint.

I was not compensated for this post but I did receive a necklace for review purposes. All opinions are my own.

Planning a safari themed nursery?  Looking to add a little Indian themed design into your foyer?  How cute is this Ellie Side Table from Serena & Lily.  This table is just the piece of furniture that can grow from baby to teenager.  I think it would look great in any globetrotting kid’s room or playroom or the den or the foyer or the bathroom…

Move over Mary Jane socks, the hot new fashion must have for baby girls is cowgirl boot tights from Bootzies.

Spotlight on the Wild Wild West: Fashion must have accessory for Baby Girls

These one-of-a-kind tights feature white or pastel cotton legs and an adorable cowboy boot design available in multiple colors and patterns.  They are available in sizes 0-6 months, 6-18 months which is exactly when those chubby baby legs are at their cutest and 2-4 years.

I think the red and brown would be the cutest with a little denim dress but the animal print styles are great for those fashion forward babes. They’re a nice compliment to the western-inspired fall fashions I’ve been seeing on the runways.  They’re a great baby shower gift too.

Bon voyage…

Spotlight on NYC: Tours for …

March 19, 2014 By admin

New York City kids are exposed to a lot of amazing cultural experiences and its great how many of the top NYC museums cater to their tiniest visitors.  If you’ve got a 4-year old, you’ve got to check out the Museum of Modern Art’s (MOMA) complimentary Tours for 4’s weekend family gallery talks.

Globetrotting Mommy: Spotlight on NYC: Tours for 4s at MOMA

Tickets are distributed at 10 am on a first-come, first-served basis so arrive on time.  Participants are given tokens to check coats in lockers which is a nice touch.  We visited in February for the Breaking the Mold: Materials and Techniques gallery talk and our group had about 10 kids and their parents.  Our tour guide Shannon reviewed the rules for visiting the museum and we were on our way.  We stopped at a few exhibits and the kids were asked for their thoughts along the way as the guide explained about the artwork and artists like Isa Genzken.  My daughter’s favorite part was the age appropriate art projects they got to do on the floor involving designs and textures.  The tour lasts about an hour and then you are free to explore on your own.  Be sure to check out the Moma Art Lab where you can play, read, experiment and create your own stop-animation movies.

Upcoming weekend themes for the Tours for 4s program include:

March – Shape Shifting

April – Faces and Figures:  People and Portraits

May – From Furry to Feathered:  Animals in Art

If your kids are older, check out the MOMA’s A Closer Look for Kids and Tours for Tweens programs.

If you’ll be visiting NYC with kids this spring or summer, these programs would be a nice addition to your itinerary.  The MOMA is centrally located near a lot of family friendly attractions and kid-friendly stores including Central Park, Rockefeller Center, FAO Schwartz, LEGO Store, American Girl Store and the Eloise Shop at the Plaza.

When The Duchess of Cambridge became a mom, women across the world wondered how she’d combine her glamorous life with motherhood.  Kate Middleton has a way of making everything look easy and her hot new mommy necklace from Merci Maman, a UK-based e-boutique is just another example of her simple yet chic style.

The hand-engraved “Duchess” necklace features three charms suspended from a gold plated long chain:  a mini heart engraved with W representing Prince William, a disc with her baby son’s full name George Alexander Louis, and a sweet little boy charm.  It starts at about $150 making it a very affordable option in the world of celebrity mom necklaces.

Order yours now, demand for the necklace has already skyrocketed.  I think this would be a great present for any new mom…

Spotlight on New Orleans: …

Looking for a kid-friendly activity to celebrates Marti Gras at home? Fat Tuesday is tomorrow and while my daughter is too young to enjoy the debauchery of Marti Gras in New Orleans, she’s just the right age for making beaded necklaces out of candy! Here’s a tutorial to make your own New Orleans inspired candy necklace to get you in the celebratory mood.

Grab some string or ribbon, scissors and edible treats with holes in the center to string and you’re good to go. Twizzlers, Life Savers, gummy circles, Cheerios and Fruit Loops are ideal for this project. Kids can design a pattern, create monotone creations or just pick and choose as they go. This is a great project for kids of all ages but younger kids might need some help with stringing.

Cut the string and tie a candy at one end with a knot. Add candy and cereal until you’ve perfected the design and length. Knot the ends and slip it over your heads.

Chinese Astrology: The Year of …

February 26, 2014 By admin

Hey baby, what’s your Chinese sign? If you’ve ever eaten in a Chinese restaurant, you know that the Chinese zodiac is based on your birth year with each year commemorating an animal and their attributes.  The Chinese New Year has arrived and this is the Year of the Horse. According to Chinese astrology, those born during this year are quick-witted, chatty and popular!

I think it would be fun to incorporate some cute horse themed accessories into your baby’s nursery design.  Here are my favorite picks:

A rocking horse is a nursery classic and this Playsam Rocking Horse in Red will add a nice dash of color.  I love the sleek modern design.

I love Jonathan Adler’s whimsical styles and this horse table lamp would work great in a nursery or playroom.

How sweet is this musical baby mobile featuring vintage horses?  So cute for a circus themed nursery.

This cute Pull Along Double Pony from Land of Nod would be perfect for a baby boy.

This Parisian carousel horse print from Etsy would add a fun vibe to any nursery or playroom.

Spotlight on Brooklyn: …

During one of the recent snowstorms (yes, way too many this year!) my daughter and I were invited to join the Appaman team at Park Slope’s Hiho Batik boutique.  It can be a pain to to trek around in the snow with kids but we’re always eager to explore new neighborhood finds, we love artsy opportunities and we’re big Appaman fans so off we went.

Brooklyn’s trendy Park Slope neighborhood is full of adorable boutiques, cafes and tree lined streets.  When you first enter Hiho Batik, you’ll find a wide range of adorable kids clothing, great gifts and toys in the front.  In the back, you’ll find a design center where you can design your own batik creation.

If you’re not familiar with the ancient art of batik, the process involves creating intricate designs using wax and dyes.  I’ve visited batik workshops in the Caribbean where I’ve bought some beautiful batik sarongs so I was super excited to try the process first hand.

We sat down with the design team who walked us through each step.  We started by choosing our creation (shirts or pillow) then we were given a piece of paper to draw our design in pencil at a large craft table.  There is a book with designs that you can trace or you can make your own creation. Once the design was perfect, my daughter and I traced over with a black marker and then headed over to the next station.

The next step was hot wax and that’s best left to older kids or grown ups.  With a special machine, you dispense the hot wax on top of the design outline moving quickly and smoothly.  Don’t worry, you practice on a t-shirt first to get the technique down. From there, its back to the craft table where you choose your selection of colored dyes to fill in the areas between the wax design.

Globetrotting Mommy - Getting Crafty with Appaman at Hiho Batik Boutique

After choosing your background color, the Hiho Batik team washes out the wax and finishes your impressive one-of-a-kind creation to be picked up later.  There is no entry fee and pricing is $45 which is great for a day’s activity and personalized creation.

Volia!  Here’s our pillow we made for grandma:

Globetrotting Mommy - Getting Crafty with Appaman at Hiho Batik Boutique

You can make an appointment to create your own batik masterpiece or just walk in.  Hiho Batik also offers children’s parties which would be great for kids 5 and up.  If you’re not coming to Brooklyn any time soon, you can create your design at home and the Hiho team will make it into a shirt, tote or pillow for you!

After making our creation my daughter enjoyed decorating Appaman monkey cookies (and eating) while I got the latest scoop on Appaman’s Spring 2014 collection (think comfy styles, cool graphics, hoodies, twirly skirts as well trendy dresses and cute suits for boys).

My daughter has become very particular about what she’ll wear (dresses, dresses, dresses, leggings, no jeans) and I’m always a little nervous when I buy her something new but sometimes I hit the jackpot with something we both love.  Case in point, her adorable gold Appaman winter coat she’s been wearing every single day!

Globetrotting Mommy - Getting Crafty with Appaman at Hiho Batik Boutique

If you’re getting bored of spending your snowy weekends home or in a museum, head over to Hiho Batik boutique and let your kids unleash their creativity in a cozy and fun setting.  There are some great brunch spots nearby including Lobo where we had a delicious tex-mex brunch (yummy huevos rancheros and great kids menu) after our morning craft session.

Note:  Thanks to Appaman and Hiho Batik for inviting us to create our pillow and providing us with a fabulous goody bag.  All opinions are my own.
